SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The UNCG Spartans, who shot 59 percent from the floor, defeated the Wofford women's basketball team 87-75 Monday night in Benjamin Johnson Arena.
Lucy Mason opened the scoring for UNCG with a mid-range jumper for an early 2-0 lead. Wofford responded with a 13-6 run, behind six points from Wrightson and five from Rachel Brittenham, to claim a 13-8 advantage at the 15:15 mark. The Spartans tied the game at 13 with 13:32 remaining following a jump shot by Ebona Goins.
UNCG retook the lead, 21-19, on a lay-up by Jarae Savage with 11:25 left in the first half. At the 9:15 mark, the Spartans extended their lead to 26-19 following a basket by Savage and two free throws by Mason. The Terriers answered back with a 8-0 run to retake the lead, 27-26, with 7:46 left on a two layups by Daniella Motley, a pair of free throws by Jordan Frazier, and a tough basket by Mariah Masalin.
Breonna Petterson sliced to the basket and scored for UNCG to tied the game at 34 at the 3:15 mark. The Spartans pushed their lead to five points with just less than a minute to play after a layup by Mason as UNCG took a 41-36 lead into the locker rooms.
Mason opened the scoring again for the Spartans in the second half to extend their lead to 43-36. Wofford tied the game at 45 points with 16:55 to play after a free throw by Brittenham, a layup by Michelle Merritt, and a jumper by Motley. UNCG extended their lead to 57-51 following a three pointer by Goins and a fast break layup by Mason at the 12:52 mark.
The Spartans opened the lead to 64-53 with 9:34 to play after a corner three and fast break layup by Mason. After a free throw by Wrightson, UNCG went on a quick 14-4 run to push their lead to a game-high 18 points, 78-60, at 6:24. Wofford would cut the lead to 80-69 after a fast break layup by Merritt and a pair of free throws by Motley with 2:47 to play.
The Spartans maintained their lead down the stretch making free throws to secure the 87-75 victory.
Wrightson led all Terriers with 21 points and now has 991 points in her career. Motley scored 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Brittenham finished the game one point shy of a double-double with nine points and 10 assist. She now sits three assist shy of breaking Wofford's all-time record.
UNCG shot 67% in the second half to pull away. Mason led all scorers with 25 points on 9-11 shooting. Goins came off the bench to score 16, while Stevenson and Patterson each contributed 11.
Wofford returns to action Saturday, February 2, to host the Bulldogs of Samford at 2:00 p.m. in the Benjamin Johnson Arena.
