CULLOWHEE, N.C. -- The Wofford women's basketball team could not overcome poor shooting as the Terriers fell at Western Carolina, 54-40, Saturday afternoon in the Ramsey Center in a Southern Conference game.
Shauna Terry scored six of Western Carolina's first nine13 points as the Catamounts held a 13-6 just over six minutes into play. Wofford cut the lead to three points,13-10, following two offensive rebounds and baskets by Rachel Brittenham and Daniella Motley with 12 minutes left in the half. Western Carolina answered on its next possession with a Terry post move and basket as the Catamounts kept the lead at four points, 15-11.
The Terriers cut the margin to one point, 17-16, on a Jordan Frazier three from the wing at the seven minute mark, but the Catamounts responded with a 9-5 run to take a 26-21 lead to close out the first half.
Wofford made only eight of its 25 field goal attempts in the half, 32 percent, while Western Carolina converted 11 of its 21 shots from the floor, 52 percent. The Catamounts scored 20 of their 26 points in the paint, while 12 of the Terriers' 21 points came from the lane in the half.
Western Carolina came out of the half with a 7-2 run sparked by a three from Hana Haden to take a 33-23 lead two minutes into the half. The Terriers used a 6-0 run highlighted by four points from Frazier to cut the lead to four points, 35-31, with 12:23 on the clock.
The Catamounts regained control of the game and a double-digit lead, 46-33, with an 11-2 run over the next eight minutes. Wofford ended a six minute scoring drought with a basket by Brittenham to cut the margin to 11 points, 46-35, with four minutes remaining in the game.
Wofford was never able to close the gap as Western Carolina made its free throws down the stretch to earn the 54-40 win.
The Terriers ended the game 28 percent from the floor, 15-of-53, 17 percent from behind the three-point line, and 73 percent from the free throw line, while Western cooled down in the second half to finish at a 43 percent clip overall, 19-of-44, 14 percent from three and 75 percent from the charity stripe.
Brittenham paced the Terries with nine points and added six rebounds. Motley finished with eight points and and eight rebounds. Frazier followed with seven points.
Terry led all scorers in the game with 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor and 3-of-4 from the free throw line. She also led the Catamounts in rebounds with five.
The loss drops the Terriers, who remain winless in the Southern Conference, fall to 5-6 overall, while Western Carolina improves to 4-8 overall and 2-1 in the SoCon.
Wofford returns to the Benjamin Johnson Arena and starts a three-game home stand with Elon on January 9 at 6 p.m.
