BOONE, N.C. -- The Wofford women's basketball team lost a 77-50 decision at Appalachian State Saturday afternoon in the Holmes Center in the a Southern Conference game.
Appalachian State got off to a 10-1 start aided by the Mountaineers defensive pressure that caused six Terrier turnovers through the first five minutes of play. Morgan Wrightson scored Wofford's first basket on a layup following an offensive rebound of her own miss at the 14-minute mark to cut the App State lead to 10-3.
After trading baskets, Maryah Syndor knocked down a three from the corner to send the Mountaineers on a 7-0 run as they pushed the lead to 19-5 with 7:17 left in the half. Wrightson scored the next four points for the Terriers including a three as Wofford cut the lead down to 19-9 a minute later.
App State closed out the final six minutes of the first half with a 12-5 run as the Mountaineers took a 31-16 lead into the break.
The Mountaineers came out of the half and extended the lead to 41-23 on two Syndor free throws four minutes into action, but the Terriers cut the lead down to 16 points, 41-25, following five straight points from Rachel Brittenham a minute later.
App State answered with a 9-2 run to push the margin to 25 points, 50-25, with 11:37 remaining. Wofford trimmed the margin with a 9-3 to make it 53-34 on a Brittenham layup with nine and a half minutes left in play.
Wofford was unable to close the gap as App State kept the margin between 20 and 25 points over nine and a half minutes of play en route to a 77-50 win over the Terriers.
The Mountaineers controlled the glass with a 51-37 rebound advantage, and won the battle in the paint with 44 points compared to 20 for the Terriers.
App State went 48 percent from the floor, 25 percent from three and 75 percent from the free throw line, while Wofford finished at 28 percent overall, 18 percent from three and 50 percent from the line.
Brittenham and Wrightson paced Wofford with 14 points each. Thirteen of Brittenham's 14 came in the second half.
Anna Freeman led all scorers with 19 points, 13 of which came in the second half. Syndor and Courtney Freeman followed with 14 points and 11 points respectively. Raven Gary notched ten points.
Wofford stays on the road to complete its current three-game home stand with a trip to Davidson on February 18 at 7 p.m. for its next game.
