Davidson Uses Hot Second Half to Hand Wofford 67-54 Loss

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson used 39 points and a 67 percent field goal percentage in the second half to hand the Wofford women’s basketball team a 67-54 loss Monday night in the John Belk Arena in a Southern Conference game.
 
Wofford shot 42 percent in the first half compared to Davidson’s 35 percent mark, but the Wildcats heated up in the second half to finish at a 49 percent mark.  The Terriers ended the game at 35 percent from the floor.
 
Wofford opened the first six minutes of play with an 11-4 run sparked by a Morgan Wrightson step back jumper and a Logan Morris three-point play.  Wrights had six of the Terriers first nine points.  Davidson controlled the paint with 44 points compared to just 26 for the Terriers. 
 
The Terriers kept the lead at seven until Mariah Masalin made a jumper from the top of the key to give the Terriers a 15-6 with 11:03 showing on the clock.  The basket ended a two and a half minute streak without points for the Terriers.   The Wildcats answered with two free throws from Sophia Aleksandravicius to end a 3:41 stint without points for Davidson and cut the lead back to seven points, 15-8, a minute later.
 
Wofford took the lead out to 11 points, 19-8, following two Wrightson free throws and a Lauren Kirby jumper at the eight minute mark.  However, Davidson responded with a 6-0 run to trim the lead to 19-14, two minutes later.  Wrightson ended the run with a three from the wing, but Shneeka Center answered with a three on the next Davidson possession to keep the lead at five points, 22-17, with 4:32 left in the first half.
 
Center’s three sent the Wildcats on an 8-0 run to cut the lead the Wofford lead down to two points, 23-21, with 3:12 left.  After trading threes, Davidson pulled even at 26, on a two Sarah Davis free throws, but Wrightson converted her second step back jumper of the game and her 17th point of the half to give the Terriers a 28-26 lead with 1:42 remaining in the half.  Davidson retied the game at 28 on a layup from Laura Murray at the buzzer sending the game into the half.
 
Wofford ended the first half with a 42 percent shooting percentage compared to Davidson’s 35 percent mark.
 
After trading baskets to open the half, Davidson broke a tie at 32 with a 6-0 run to take a 38-32 on an Aleksandravicius layup at the 15-minute mark.  Motley scored on a post move to snap a four-minute scoreless streak for the Terriers to cut the the lead to 38-34.
 
The Wildcats answered with another run, this time they used a 6-2 spurt to pull out to an eight point lead, 44-36, following back-to-back Aleksandravicius baskets with 12:52 showing on the clock.  Alekxsandravicius scored eight of Davidson 16 points in the first eight minutes of play in the second half.
 
Davidson took the lead out to 11 points, 49-38, but Wofford answered with a 5-0 run to trim the margin back to six points, 49-43, on a Chanel Stokes three with nine minutes left.   The Wildcats regained control as they took the lead back to double-digits, 55-45, on a Jasmine Calin layup with 5:44 remaining in the game.
 
Two minutes later a Barbara Sitton steal and fast break layup gave Davidson a 59-47 lead, but Wofford battled back nine points, 63-54, on a Rachel Brittenham three point play with a minute left.  Davidson converted its free throws over the final minute, including four from Sitton to give the Wildcats the 67-54 win.
 
Wrightson ended the game with a team-high 21 points on 8-of-17 shooting from the floor including two threes.  Daniella Motley finished with eight points, and Brittenham had eight points, seven rebounds, six assists and five steals.  Her eight rebounds ties a career-high.  Brittenham also broke the Wofford school record for minutes played in a career in the game.  She has played in 3,234 minutes in her career.
 
Aleksandravicius finished with a game-high 26 points, 20 of which came in the second half.  She was 11-of-13 from the floor and made all four of her free throw attempts.  She also had a game-high nine rebounds and three blocked shots.  Murray added 11 points, and Sarah Davis followed with ten points.
 
Wofford wraps up its current three-game road trip at Elon on Wednesday, February 20 at 6 p.m.
