Elon’s Late Second Half Run Lifts Phoenix by Terriers, 62-58

ELON, N.C. – Elon used a 12-4 run over the final five minutes to rally for a 62-58 come-from-behind win over the Woffod women’s basketball team Wednesday night in Alumni Gym.
 
The two teams were almost even from the floor with Wofford hold a 41 percent field goal percentage compared to 40 percent for Elon.  The Phoenix held a small advantage from three, 29 percent, 2-of-7, compared to the Terriers 11 percent, 1of-9.  However, Elon converted 18 of its 26 free throws for 69 percent, 13-of-18 in the second half, while Wofford made only 11 of its 26 free throws for 42 percent, 5-of-18 in the second half.
 
The Terriers scored 21 points off of 13 Phoenix turnovers, while Elon only managed 13 points off of 14 Terrier turnovers.  Wofford also held a small edge on points in the paint, 32-28, and rebounds 40-36.
 
Morgan Wrightson paced Wofford with 14 points, ten in the second half, while Daniella Motley followed with 12 points and nine rebounds.  Ashton Fleming led Wofford’s bench with a career-high ten points.  Fleming also grabbed nine rebounds in the game. Chanel Stokes added seven points off the bench as the Terriers bench outscored Elon’s bench 19-7.
 
Kelsey Evans scored 21 points to lead Elon.  She was 6-of-15 from the floor and 9-of-12 from the free throw line.  Kelsey Harris went 5-of-8 from the floor and 8-of-10 from the fine for 18 points.  She also had a game-high five assists.  Ali Ford chipped in 11 points for the Phoenix.
 
Wofford used four points from Logan Morris to take an early 8-5 lead just over four minutes into play.  Elon answered with a 6-2 run to take an 12-10 lead on a Harris layup and Evans free throw with 11:22 on the clock.  Fleming tied the game at 12 on the next Wofford possession with a layup.
 
With the score knotted at 14, the Phoenix used an 8-0 run to take a 22-14 lead sparked by three from Zora Stephenson five minutes later.  The Terriers cut the lead down to 22-18 with free throws from Wrightson and Fleming with just over six minutes to play. 
 
Elon scored the next four points to take a 26-18 lead, but Wofford battle back with free throws from Jordan Frazier and a fast break layup from Wrightson to keep the Phoenix lead at four points, 26-22, with 4:17 left in the half. Following an Elon free throw, Stokes knocked down a three from the wing and Aliyah Johnson hit a jumper from the baseline in transition to tie the game at 27 at the two-minute mark.  After trading baskets, Stokes hit a floater in the lane with five seconds left to give Wofford a 31-29 lead at the half.
 
Wofford used a three-point play from Rachel Brittenham and a layup from Wrightson to take a 38-35 lead four minutes into the second half.  Elon answered a minute and a half later with a Harris jumper to tie the game at 39. 
 
The Terriers responded with a 6-0 run highlighted by a Fleming offensive rebound and put back to take a 45-39 lead at the 13-minute mark.  The basket was Fleming tenth point of the game tying a career-high.
 
The Phoenix cut the gap down to two points, 45-43, on a fast break layup by Stephenson a minute later, but the Terriers used jumpers by Motley and Wrightson to extend the lead to 49-43 with just under ten minutes to play. 
 
Two and half minutes later, Elon cut the lead to 51-49 with a 6-2 run on an Evans layup, but Wrightson ended a two and a half minute scoreless streak for the Terriers with a layup with 5:29 left in the game to give Wofford a 53-49 lead.
 
However, the Phoenix went on an 8-1 run to take a 57-54 lead highlighted by an Evans three point play and an assist on a Harris layup with just over two minutes remaining.  Motley snapped a three-minute stint without a basket for the Terriers and Wrightson scored on a layup in transition to regain the lead for Wofford, 58-57, with a minute and a half showing.
 
Evans scored on a jumper with 45 seconds as Elon regained the lead, 59-58, and Wofford missed a layup on its ensuing possession.  Following a Phoenix rebound and timeout, the Terriers fouled Evans sending her to the line where she made both free throws it a three-point game with 22 seconds.  Wofford's game-tying three was blocked and Harris hit a free throw to seal the 62-58 win for the Elon.
 
Wofford returns to action Saturday, February 23 at 2 p.m. in the Benjamin Johnson Arena against Georgia Southern for its next game.
