Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Saturday afternoon, the Wofford baseball team was defeated 4-3 by Pittsburgh. Wofford is now 3-2, while Pittsburgh is 4-0. For the Terriers, Josh Hyman had two doubles and two RBIs. The Panthers were led by Elvin Soto with two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs.
The Panthers loaded the bases in the top of the first, but all three runners were stranded. Pittsburgh got on the board in the top of the second inning when Eric Hess doubled and scored on a ground out by Evan Oswald for a 1-0 advantage. In the top of the third inning, Elvin Soto hit a two-run homer to give Pittsburgh a 3-0 lead.
Wofford had runners at second and third after a hit by pitch to Clark Wise and a single by Alec Paradowski. A double down the right field line by Josh Hyman scored both runners to make it a 3-2 game. After a scoreless fourth inning, the Panthers added a run in the top of fifth on an RBI double by Elvin Soto to take a 4-2 lead.
Neither team scored in the sixth, seventh, or eighth innings. In the top of the ninth, the Panthers were retired in order. Wofford led off the bottom of the ninth with a double by Josh Hyman, followed by a single by Seth Neely. Hyman and Neely both stole bases on a strikeout, cutting the lead to 4-3. A final strikeout ended the contest.
Wofford starter Brandon Yarusi (0-1) went five innings and allowed four runs on eight hits with five strikeouts. J.D. Osborne threw three innings and gave up one hit with one strikeout. Matthew Milburn went an inning and did not allow a base runner.
Pittsburgh starter Ethan Mildren (1-0) threw eight innings and gave up two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts. Tanner Wilt picked up his second save of the season by pitching the ninth. He gave up one run on two hits with three strikeouts.
The Terriers and Pittsburgh will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon. The first game will be seven innings, followed by a nine inning contest. On Wednesday night, Wofford will face Presbyterian College in Forest City, N.C.
