BOONE, N.C. – The Wofford baseball team was defeated 4-0 by Appalachian State on Saturday afternoon at Smith Stadium. The Mountaineers scored two unearned runs in the first inning and added two runs in the sixth to even the weekend series.
Wofford is now 13-15 on the season and 4-7 in the Southern Conference. Appalachian State is 13-9 overall and 5-5 in the league. The Terriers were led by Matthew Ramsay with two hits. Sam Agnew-Wieland threw a complete game shutout for the Mountaineers, while four players had two hits each.
Wofford was retired in order to open the game. The Mountaineers led off with a walk to Hector Crespo and he stole second. With two outs, Will Callaway reached on an error that scored Crespo. A double by Noah Holmes scored Callaway for a 2-0 lead after one inning. The Terriers had a single by James Plaisted in the top of the second, but he was left on base.
After the Mountaineers left one runner on base in the bottom of the second, Wofford began the third inning with a walk and a bunt single by Matt Moore. A double play ended the scoring chance for the Terriers. In the top of the fifth, Matthew Ramsay singled and Matt Moore walked but the Terriers were unable to plate a run.
Appalachian State led off the bottom of the sixth with a single by Noah Holmes. A single from Josh Zumbrook gave the Mountaineers runners on the corners. A triple to right field by Preston Troutman scored one run and Zumbrook was thrown out at home as the Mountaineers took a 3-0 lead. William Head added an RBI single for a 4-0 advantage after six innings.
In the top of the eighth, Wofford led off with a single by Matthew Ramsay and he stole second. A fly ball moved him to third with one out, but two ground outs ended the scoring opportunity. The Mountaineers had two runners on base in the bottom of the eighth after a walk and a single, but both were stranded. The Terriers led off the ninth with a single by Josh Hyman, but a double play erased the runner. A ground out ended the game.
Wofford starter Jesse Morris (4-2) went six innings and allowed four runs, only two of which were earned. He gave up nine hits and recorded four strikeouts. Will Stillman went an inning and struck out two batters and allowed one hit. Connell Anderson walked one, Connor Folytn struck out one, and Tanner Hawley had the final two outs in the eighth inning on a fielder’s choice and strikeout.
Appalachian State starter Sam Agnew-Wieland (4-2) threw a complete game shutout with only five hits. He struck out ten batters and only issued two walks.
Wofford and Appalachian State will complete the series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Next week the Terriers will play at Winthrop on Tuesday and at Auburn on Wednesday before beginning a three-game series at Samford on Friday.
