Baseball Downed 3-0 At Georgia Southern

STATESBORO, Ga. – The Wofford College baseball team was defeated 3-0 by Georgia Southern on Saturday afternoon at J.I. Clements Stadium. The Eagles outhit the Terriers twelve to five in the contest that marked the first shutout of the season for each team.

Wofford is now 7-8 on the season and 0-2 in SoCon play. Georgia Southern is 8-6 and 2-0 in conference action. The Terriers were led by Josh Hyman and Matthew Pelt with two hits each, but Wofford left nine runners on base in the game. The Eagles were led by Robbie Dodds with three hits and two runs scored, while Tyler Avera had two RBIs.

To open the game, Wofford had runners at first and third before a double play ended the top half of the first inning. The Eagles loaded the bases with three straight singles in the bottom of the second inning. Tyler Avera hit a single to drive in the first run of the game and a double play ended the inning with Georgia Southern holding a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Robbie Dodds led off with a double and scored on a single by Stryker Brown for a 2-0 lead. A double by Tyler Avera scored Brown as the Eagles took a 3-0 lead. Wofford left two runners on base in the top of the fifth and Josh Hyman was left on third base in the top of the sixth.

The Terriers had two runners reach base in the top of the eighth as Matthew Kaskow was hit by a pitch and Josh Hyman singled, but both were stranded. In the top of the ninth, Matthew Pelt hit a two-out double but a strikeout ended the game.

Wofford starter Jesse Morris (3-1) went six innings and allowed three runs on ten hits with three strikeouts. Matthew Milburn threw one inning and gave up one hit. DooJoon Park also worked one inning with one hit allowed.

Georgia Southern starter Jason Richman (3-1) threw seven innings and did not allow a run on three hits with five strikeouts. Matt McCall went two-thirds of an inning and allowed one hit. Justin Hess earned the save by going 1.1 innings with one hit allowed and three strikeouts.

The Terriers and Eagles will play on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. to complete the three game series. Wofford returns home on Tuesday against UNC Asheville at 6:00 p.m.
