Baseball Shuts Out Furman 5-0

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford senior pitcher Brandon Yarusi threw a complete game shutout as the Terriers defeated Furman 5-0 on Sunday afternoon at Russell C. King Field. With the win, the Terriers won the season series against the Paladins for the first time since 2009.

Wofford is now 15-23 on the season and 6-12 in the Southern Conference. Furman is 19-16 overall and 7-11 in conference play. The Terriers were led by Alex Paradowski with two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs. Jake Jones had four of the eight hits on the day for the Paladins.

The Paladins had one hit each in the first, second, and third innings. Wofford had a single in the first inning and left one runner on base in the second inning. In the bottom of the third, the Terriers opened with Demetrius Jennings reaching on an error. Bunt singles by Clark Wise and Alec Paradowski brought one run across the plate. With one out, a single by Seth Neely drove in a run for a 2-0 lead. A sacrifice bunt by James Plaisted scored Paradowski from third for a 3-0 lead.

After Furman was retired in order in the fourth, Wofford led off with a hit by pitch. With two outs, Alec Paradowski hit his first career home run over the right field fence to give the Terriers a 5-0 lead. Neither team scored in the fifth or sixth innings.

In the top of the seventh the Paladins were retired in order and Wofford left one on base in the seventh. With two outs in the top of the eighth, Furman had singles from Will Muzika and Jake Jones before a fly ball ended the scoring chance. Wofford left one runner on base in the bottom of the eighth. In the top of the ninth, Alex Abrams singled with one out, but a fly ball and pop up ended the game.

Wofford starter Brandon Yarusi (2-2) went nine innings and did not allow a run as he scattered eight hits. He recorded eight strikeouts and did not issue a walk. It was his second career nine-inning shutout win and second complete game this season.

Furman starter Jake Wolff (2-1) went 3.2 innings and gave up five runs on five hits with two strikeouts. Paul Warford threw 1.2 innings with two hits allowed and one strikeout. Ryan Morse worked a third of an inning with one strikeout. Matt Solter went two innings without allowing a hit and two strikeouts. Ryan Dittmar recorded the final out.

On Wednesday night, Wofford will host USC Upstate at 6:00 p.m. before heading to Elon for a three-game series beginning on Friday night.
