ELON, N.C. – The Wofford baseball team split a doubleheader against Elon on Saturday afternoon at Latham Field. The Phoenix scored six runs in the fourth inning on the way to a 15-5 win in the first game. In the second game, Wofford put seven runs on the board in the fifth inning and stole nine bases for an 11-5 win.
Wofford is now 16-25 on the season and 7-13 in the Southern Conference. Elon is 21-20 overall and 13-7 in conference play.
In the first game, the Terriers had runners on the corners in the top of the first inning when Demetrius Jennings broke for home on a double steal and was safe for a 1-0 lead. Wofford left two runners on base to end the inning. The Phoenix tied the game at one with an RBI single from Alex Swim in the bottom of the first.
Both teams left one runner on base in the second inning. After Wofford was retired in order in the top of the third, Elon took the lead on a three-run homer by Ryan Kinsella for a 4-1 score. In the top of the fourth, the Terriers had runners at second and third but both were left on base. The Phoenix loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth with one out. A single by Ryan Kinsella drove in two runs for a 6-1 lead. A third run scored on a wild pitch and another run crossed the plate on an RBI single from Joey Tomko for an 8-1 advantage. A two-out double by Chris King drove in two more runs to push the lead to 10-1 after four innings.
A double play ended the top of the fifth for the Terriers. Elon added a run on a ground out by Sebastian Gomez for an 11-1 lead after five complete innings. Wofford was retired in order in the top of the sixth and Elon stranded two in the bottom of the sixth.
Singles by Matt Ramsay and Matthew Pelt along with a walk loaded the bases in the top of the seventh for the Terriers. A double by Alec Paradowski drove in two runs. Matthew Kaskow scored from third base on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Josh Hyman made it an 11-5 score. Elon added a run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh and a two-run homer by Ryan Kinsella pushed the lead to 14-5.
The Terriers left one runner on base in the top of the eighth. Elon loaded the bases on three straight singles in the bottom of the eighth. A fielder’s choice by Quinn Bower scored one run for a 15-5 lead after eight innings. Wofford was retired in order in the top of the ninth to end the game.
Wofford starter Tanner Hawley (0-2) went 3.1 innings with seven runs allowed on six hits and had one strikeout. Connor Foltyn Connell allowed two runs on one hit. Connell Anderson went three innings and gave up four runs on three hits. Josh Simpson threw 1.2 innings with two runs allowed on four hits.
Elon starter Dylan Clark (5-3) threw six innings with one run allowed on two hits with four strikeouts. Tyler Manez worked an inning with four runs allowed on four hits with one strikeout. John Antonelli went the final two innings and allowed one hit with two strikeouts.
In game two, Demetrius Jennings opened the game with a single and he was driven home on a single by Seth Neely for a 1-0 lead. Elon answered with a single and an RBI double by Sebastian Gomez to tie the game at one. A triple by Alex Swim scored Gomez for a 2-1 advantage at the end of the first inning.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Phoenix had back-to-back singles to open the inning. A sacrifice bunt mover the runners into scoring position, but two strikeouts ended the fourth inning.
Matt Ramsay led off the fifth inning with a single and Luke Feisal was hit by a pitch. Clark Wise safely bunted and a throwing error allowed Ramsay to score for a 2-2 score. RBI singles by Alec Paradowski and Josh Hyman gave the Terriers a 4-2 lead. Seth Neely added a single to right field to score Paradowski and a double steal allowed Hyman to score for a 6-2 score. A double by James Plaisted drove in Neely, while a double steal attempt plated another run for an 8-2 lead before the third out.
The Phoenix got one run back on an RBI double by Chris King in the bottom of the fifth inning. Wofford left one on base in the top of the sixth after a single by Alec Paradowski. Elon opened the bottom of the sixth with a single and a double. A walk with one out loaded the bases and a second walk allowed a run to score. A strikeout and pop fly ended the seventh with the bases loaded and an 8-4 Wofford advantage.
Wofford opened the seventh with a triple by Seth Neely. After a pitching change, a double by James Plaisted down the left line drove in Neely. Plaisted stole third and scored on a throwing error on the play for a 10-4 lead. Matt Ramsay walked and Clark Wise was hit by a pitch. A two-out single by Demetrius Jennings drove in Ramsay to push the lead to 11-4 at the stretch.
Elon had the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh with two outs, but a strikeout ended the inning. Wofford loaded the bases in the top of the eighth with one out, however all three runners were stranded. The Phoenix opened the bottom of the eighth with a single. With two outs, Joey Tomko reached on an error and one run scored for an 11-5 score.
Clark Wise singled to open the Wofford half of the ninth, but one runner was left on base. The Phoenix was retired in order in the bottom of the ninth for the 11-5 final score.
Wofford starter Jesse Morris (6-3) threw 5.1 innings with four runs allowed on nine hits and had six strikeouts. Will Stillman went two-thirds of an inning with one strikeout. J.D. Osborne worked an inning and did not allow a hit with one strikeout. Matthew Milburn gave up one unearned run on one hit in two innings with three strikeouts.
Elon starter Spencer Medick (5-3) went six innings and gave up nine runs on eleven hits with five strikeouts. Ryan Pennell threw two innings and allowed two runs on three hits. Jordan Darnell allowed one hit in one inning with two strikeouts.
The series will conclude on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Next week the Terriers will travel to UNC Asheville on Wednesday afternoon before hosting Davidson in a weekend series beginning Friday night.
