ELON, N.C. – On Sunday afternoon, the Wofford baseball team was defeated 14-3 by Elon at Latham Field. The Phoenix built an 8-1 advantage after two innings and did not look back as they took the weekend series.
Wofford is now 16-26 on the season and 7-14 in the Southern Conference. Elon is 22-20 overall and 14-7 in conference play. The Terriers were led by Josh Hyman with three hits, while Alec Paradowski had two hits and scored all three runs. The Phoenix was led by Sebastian Gomez with four hits and four RBIs.
Wofford opened the first inning with runners on the corners and an infield single by Seth Neely drove in Alec Paradowski for a 1-0 lead. Elon led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run by Sebastian Gomez to tie the game at one. A two-run homer by Ryan Kinsella gave the Phoenix a 3-1 lead.
After Wofford was retired in order in the second, the Phoenix had back-to-back singles before a double by Sebastian Gomez made it 4-1. With the bases loaded and one out, a sacrifice fly added a run. A double by Casey Jones drove in two runs for a 7-1 lead. An RBI single by Danny Lynch pushed the lead to 8-1 before the third out of the inning.
The Terriers had two singles in the top of the third. A throwing error on a double steal allowed Alec Paradowski to score for an 8-2 score. Elon left one runner on base in the bottom of the third and Wofford left one in the top of the fourth. The Phoenix left stranded one runner in the bottom of the fourth.
In the top of the fifth, Alec Paradowski singled with two outs. Josh Hyman then hit a double that scored Paradowski for an 8-3 game.
Elon had three straight singles in the bottom of the fifth, with Joey Tomko’s single scoring a run for a 9-3 lead. A sacrifice fly by Alex Swim with the bases loaded made it 10-3 before a strikeout ended the fifth inning. Wofford added a single in the top of the sixth, but Matt Ramsay was left on base. The Phoenix loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the sixth. A double by Sebastian Gomez drove in two runs for a 12-3 advantage. The bases were left loaded at the end of the sixth inning.
Alec Paradowski added a single for Wofford in the top of the seventh, but he was stranded. Elon added a run on an RBI double by Antonio Alvarez and a sacrifice fly made it 14-3. Wofford was retired in order in the top of the eighth. Elon left one runner on base in the bottom of the eighth. The Terriers added a single in the top of the ninth by Matthew Pelt, but he was left on third base at the final out.
Wofford starter Brandon Yarusi (2-3) went only 1.2 innings and allowed eight runs on eight hits. Luke Leftwich threw 3.2 innings with five strikeouts and four runs allowed on seven hits. Will Stillman went two thirds of an inning and did not allow a hit with one strikeout. J.D. Osborne worked an inning and gave up two runs on three hits. Eric Eck threw the eighth and had two strikeouts without allowing a hit.
Elon starter Kyle Webb (4-2) threw eight innings and allowed only three runs on eight hits with six strikeouts. Nate Young went the ninth inning and allowed one hit and had one strikeout.
Next week the Terriers will travel to UNC Asheville on Wednesday afternoon before hosting Davidson in a weekend series beginning Friday night.
