ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Wofford baseball team rallied in the ninth inning on a rainy Wednesday afternoon at Greenwood Field, but were defeated 8-7 by UNC Asheville. The Bulldogs had an 8-3 advantage before a Terrier rally drove in four runs in the top of the ninth inning, but the tying run was left on third base.
Wofford is now 16-27 on the season and UNC Asheville is 14-29. The Terriers were led by James Plaisted with two hits and two RBIs, while Matt Ramsay added two RBIs. The Bulldogs had three hits and two RBIs by Ian Graham.
The Bulldogs scored a run on an RBI single from Sam Turner in the bottom of the second inning. A double from Ian Graham drove in another run for a 2-0 lead. Matthew Pelt singled in the top of the third, then stole second and moved to third on an error. A ground-out by Matthew Kaskow scored Pelt for a 2-1 score. Alec Paradowski singled and was left on third to end the top half. The Bulldogs added a run on an RBI single from Hunter Bryant to make it 3-1 after three innings.
In the top of the fourth, Seth Neely led off with a double and he stole third. Wofford left two runners on base to end the scoring chance. UNC Asheville had an RBI double by Sam Turner to push the lead to 4-1. A single by Tommy Houmard drove in another run for a 5-1 lead after four complete innings.
The Bulldogs loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth on a single and two walks with one out. With two outs, a throwing error allowed two runs to score for a 7-1 advantage. Wofford had runners at second and third following a walk and double by Eric Brenk in the top of the sixth. Another walk loaded the bases with one out, but the Terriers were unable to score. UNC Asheville left two on base in the bottom of the sixth.
Demetrius Jennings opened the seventh inning with a single and he moved to second on a wild pitch. After Josh Hyman walked, a double steal moved the runners into scoring position. A hit up the middle by James Plaisted drove in both runners to make it a 7-3 game at the stretch. The Bulldogs opened the bottom of the seventh with a double and a single by Ian Graham drove in the runner for an 8-3 score.
The Terriers left two on base in the top of the eighth inning and the Bulldogs stranded one in the bottom of the eighth. In the top of the ninth, Seth Neely was hit by a pitch and James Plaisted and Eric Brenk singled to load the bases. A double down the right line by Matt Ramsay scored two runs to cut the score to 8-5. Matthew Pelt and Taylor Rozier had RBI singles to make it an 8-7 game, but the tying run was left on third base.
Wofford starter Connell Anderson (0-3) threw 3.2 innings and allowed five runs, two of which were unearned, along with two strikeouts. Josh Simpson threw two-thirds of an inning with two hits and two unearned runs allowed plus a strikeout. Matt Milburn was on the mound for 1.2 innings with one hit allowed and a strikeout. Luke Leftwich threw an inning and allowed one run on three hits with three strikeouts. In the eighth inning, Dylan Cheely recorded one out and Bradley Evsich had a strikeout in getting the final two outs.
UNC Asheville starter Lucas Clarke (2-3) went 5.1 innings with one run allowed on six hits and four strikeouts. Justin Hunt threw 1.1 innings and allowed two runs on two hits with two strikeouts. Brian Connolly went 1.2 innings with four runs allowed on four hits. Nick Schavone gave up two hits. Scott Robinson got the save by working the final two-thirds of an inning with one strikeout.
The Terriers will begin a three-game Southern Conference home series against Davidson on Friday night at 6:00 p.m.
