AUBURN, Ala. – The Wofford baseball team was defeated 7-4 by Auburn at Plainsman Park on Wednesday night.  The Terriers had a 4-3 lead after the top of the fifth inning, but the Tigers scored the next four runs for a 7-4 advantage after six innings that would prove to be the final score.

Wofford is now 13-18 on the season and Auburn is 17-12 overall. The Terriers were led by Seth Neely with two hits and two RBIs, while Matthew Kaskow added two hits. The Tigers had three hits and two RBIs by Damek Tomscha to lead the team.

The Terriers opened the game with a single by Matthew Kaskow and he moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, a single by Seth Neely to right field scored Kaskow for a 1-0 lead. Auburn also led off with a single, but the runner was left on third base.

In the second inning, Clark Wise singled and moved to second on a ground out. Wise stole third and a throwing error on the play allowed him to score for a 2-0 lead. Matthew Pelt walked and stole second. A single to right field by Matthew Kaskow scored Pelt for a 3-0 advantage. The Tigers had a double to open the bottom of the second and scored a run on a fielder’s choice and error to make it 3-1. An RBI single from Dan Glevenyak cut the lead to 3-2 after two innings.

Josh Hyman led off the top of the third inning with a single and Seth Neely followed with a single. Both runners moved into scoring position after a sacrifice bunt, but were stranded. The Tigers were retired in order to end the third inning. Wofford had a single by Matthew Pelt to start the fourth inning, but he was caught stealing.

With one out in the bottom of the fourth, the Tigers had a single from Jackson Burgreen and a double by Blake Austin. A sacrifice fly by Sam Gillikin tied the game at 3-3. Wofford opened the fifth with a double down the right line by Alec Paradowski and he scored from third on a ground out by Seth Neely for a 4-3 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Tigers loaded the bases with a single, double, and hit by pitch. A single by Damek Tomscha drove in one run to tie the game at 4-4, but the bases were loaded at the end of the inning. Wofford was retired in order in the top of the sixth. Auburn took the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Dan Glenvenyak singled and an error allowed Sam Gilliken to score. RBI singles from Ryan Tella and Damek Tomscha gave the Tigers a 7-4 advantage.

After a double play ended the top of the seventh for Wofford, the Tigers had one hit in the bottom of the seventh before two strikeouts ended the inning. The Terriers were retired in order in the top of the eighth. Auburn loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth with a walk, single, and hit by pitch before a strikeout ended the inning. Wofford led off the ninth with a walk to Clark Wise, but he was stranded to end the game.

Wofford pitcher Matthew Milburn went 1.2 innings in his first career start. He gave up two unearned runs on three hits before reaching his pitch count limit. Dominick Del Monte worked 3.1 innings and gave up five runs on seven hits with two strikeouts. DooJoon Park threw an inning and gave up one hit with one strikeout. Luke Leftwich threw the seventh and allowed one hit with two strikeouts. J.D. Osborne went the eighth inning and gave up one hit with two strikeouts.

Auburn starter Trey Wingenter threw two innings and allowed three runs on four hits with two strikeouts. Justin Camp (3-0) went five innings and gave up one run on four hits. Reid Carter recorded the save after two innings without allowing a hit and three strikeouts.

The nine-game road trip for the Terriers will continue with a three-game series at Samford beginning on Friday night.
