BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Wofford baseball team was defeated 3-2 by Samford on Friday night at Joe Lee Griffin Field. The Terriers tied the game at two in the sixth on a solo home run by Matthew Ramsay, but the Bulldogs scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Wofford is now 13-19 on the season and 4-9 in the Southern Conference. Samford is 16-14 overall and 6-7 in conference games. The Terriers were led by Matthew Ramsay with two hits and an RBI. Austin Allison and Richard Greene led the Bulldogs with two hits each.
The Terriers had a single from Alec Paradowski in the first inning, while the Bulldogs were retired in order. In the second inning, Clark Wise singled up the middle and Luke Feisal was hit by a pitch, but the scoring chance ended with a double play. Samford had a single in the bottom of the second but one runner was left on base to end the inning.
Wofford had a single by Matthew Kaskow and Josh Hyman walked in the top of the third. A single to left by Seth Neely scored Kaskow for a 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs tied the game in the bottom of the third when Austin Allison singled and scored on a double by Zeth Stone. A triple by C.K. Irby with two outs drove in Stone for a 2-1 advantage.
In the top of the fourth, Clark Wise walked and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Matthew Ramsay added a single and a walk to Matthew Kaskow loaded the bases, but a strikeout ended the scoring chance. The Bulldogs hit into a double play erase a base runner in the bottom of the fourth. Wofford left one on base in the top of the fifth.
Samford had two hits in the bottom of the fifth, but left one runner on third base to end the inning. Wofford tied the game with a solo home run by Matthew Ramsay over the left field fence to make it 2-2. Matt Moore walked and stole second, but was left on base. The Bulldogs were retired in order in the bottom of the sixth.
The Terriers added a single by James Plaisted in the top of the seventh, but he was left on base. In the bottom of the seventh, the Bulldogs led off with a double by Caleb Bryson and he moved to third on a fielder’s choice. Bryson was out at home on a fielder’s choice and the third out was also made at home plate to keep the score at 2-2.
Wofford was retired in order in the top of the eighth inning. In the bottom of the eight, Samford led off with a walk and a bunt single. A single by Phillip Ervin drove in a run for a 3-2 lead. Wofford went down in order on strikeouts in the top of the ninth to end the game.
Wofford pitcher Brandon Yarusi went seven innings and allowed two runs on eight hits with one strikeout. Eric Eck (1-3) threw one inning and gave up one run on two hits with one strikeout.
Samford starter C.K. Irby (5-2) threw eight innings with two runs allowed on seven hits. He recorded seven strikeouts with two walks. Arthur Strauss picked up the save by striking out the side in the ninth.
The series against Samford will continue on Saturday at 2:00 pm CT and conclude on Sunday.
