Baseball Rally Falls Short At Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – On Saturday afternoon, the Wofford baseball team was defeated 3-2 by Samford at Joe Lee Griffin Field. The Bulldogs had a 3-0 lead after six innings, but the Terriers battled back in the eighth and ninth with runs had two on base when the game ended. 

Wofford is now 13-20 on the season and 4-10 in the Southern Conference. Samford is 17-14 overall and 7-7 in conference games. The Terriers were led by Seth Neely and Matthew Pelt, each with two hits and an RBI. Three Bulldogs had RBIs in the contest. 

The Terriers had the first hit of the day when Josh Hyman had a double in the top of the first inning.  Each team left one runner on base in the second inning. To lead off the third inning, Matt Moore had a single to left field, but he was left on third base to end the top half.

In the bottom of the third, Jared Watson led off with a single and stole second. A bunt single put runners on the corners A sacrifice fly score Watson to give Samford a 1-0 lead. An RBI single by Tommy Corbin pushed the score to 2-0 after three innings.

Wofford added a single by Seth Neely in the top of the fourth inning, but he was thrown out at home attempting to steal. The Bulldogs had a double in the bottom of the fourth, however he was stranded. Luke Feisal walked to open the fifth inning but did not advance past second base. The Bulldogs were retired in order in the bottom of the fifth.

After Wofford left one runner on base in the sixth inning, the Bulldogs opened the bottom of the sixth with back-to-back singles. With two outs, an infield single by Caleb Bryson drove in a run for a 3-0 lead. The Terriers were retired in order in the top of the seventh.

Samford had runners on the corners in the bottom of the seventh after two singles, but a strikeout ended the inning. Wofford had a single by Matthew Pelt and a walk to Alec Paradowski in the top of the eighth. Seth Neely had an RBI single with two outs to cut the lead to 3-1. The Terriers left two on base to end the top of the eighth and Samford left two on base in the bottom of the eighth. In the top of the ninth, Clark Wise led off with a single up the middle and Taylor Rozier walked with two outs.  Matthew Pelt singled to right field and scored Wise to make it 3-2, but a groundout ended the game.

Wofford pitcher Jesse Morris (4-3) threw seven innings with three runs allowed on eight hits. Morris struck out six and did not issue a walk. Matthew Milburn threw the eighth inning and had two strikeouts without allowing a hit.

Samford starter Alex Milazzo (5-0) went 7.1 innings and allowed one run on four hits with five strikeouts. Andres Gracia allowed one hit in two-thirds of an inning. Arthur Strauss picked up his sixth save by going the ninth and giving up one run on two hits with one strikeout.

The series against Samford will conclude on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. ET. The Terriers will return home on Wednesday night to play UNC Asheville at 6:00 p.m.
