Chattanooga Powers Past Women’s Basketball

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Wofford College women's basketball team was held to its lowest scoring output of the season en route to a 75-36 loss to Chattanooga in Southern Conference play on Saturday evening from McKenzie Arena.
 
Chattanooga (15-3, 7-0 SoCon) was dominant on the glass, outrebounding Wofford (3-13, 1-5 SoCon) 50-29, including 26-13 in the second half. Ashlen Dewart, Aryanna Gilbert, Taylor Hall and Moses Johnson all finished with a game-high six boards. Dewart – the SoCon Preseason Player of the Year – added a game-high 19 points and filled up the stat sheet with an assist, a block and a steal in 22 minutes of action. She shot 9-of-15 (60 percent) from the floor.
 
When the final horn sounded, 13 different Mocs found the scoring column. Chelsey Shumpert scored nine, including a 2-of-5 mark from long distance, and Meghan Downes had eight points on a perfect 3-of-3 shooting. UTC shot 52.5 percent (31-59) on the evening, besting Wofford's 23.7 percentage (14-59).
 
The win was Chattanooga's 33rd straight at home, which is the nation's longest active home winning streak.
 
For the Terriers, sophomore Ashton Fleming scored a team-high 10 points on 4-of-8 from the field. Fleming drained both of her 3-point attempts and rounded out the box score with four rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block. Meanwhile, freshman Maria Corella marked a career-high nine points and was also 4-of-8 from the floor. Sophomore Khadijah Joyner led the Terriers on the glass with five boards.
 
Wofford got off to a good defensive start, stopping UTC on each of its first three possessions. The Terriers forced Dewart into a tough look near the basket and then both Fleming and sophomore Chanel Stokes came up with steals on Chatt's next two trips.
 
Dewart broke through at the 17:30 mark, putting down the game's first points. Wofford junior Lauren Kirby tied the game with a foul-line extended jumper, but Chattanooga got its offense going and scored the next nine points for an 11-2 lead. Dewart had six on the scoreboard while the Terriers were cold, beginning the game 1-of-9 from the field.
 
Senior Logan Morris stopped the run momentarily with her first points of the night, but it was short lived. The Mocs went on a 17-4 run over the next nine minutes, taking a 28-7 lead with 6:43 to play in the half and burning two of Wofford's timeouts.
 
UTC took its largest lead of 22 points at the five-minute mark and led 34-14 at the intermission. The Mocs were unstoppable in the paint with an 18-4 advantage, and it showed in rebounds as well with UTC holding a 24-16 edge. Dewart led the game with 10 points while Corella headed the Terrier effort with five.
 
Dewart went back to work to start the second half, scoring Chatt's first seven points and helping the Mocs to a 41-16 lead. Coach Farmer burned a timeout, but Chattanooga would not be stopped.
 
With a basket by Dewart at the 13:27 mark, Chatt took a 30-point lead. The Mocs kept it rolling, extending the cushion to 40 later in the half and taking their largest lead in the game, 71-29, ahead by 42 points with 2:54 remaining.
 
The Wofford women's basketball team will look to bounce back on Monday when it takes on Samford. Tip is scheduled from Birmingham, Ala., at 2 p.m., ET.
