BOONE, N.C. – Sophomore Jordan Frazier scored a game-high 25 points but it was not enough as Appalachian State defeated the Wofford women's basketball team, 61-54, Saturday evening from the Holmes Center.
Wofford led 39-36 with 8:20 remaining in the ball game. Joi Jones hit a triple to tie it up and the two sides proceeded to score at will over the next six minutes. Appalachian State came out of it ahead 53-52 and Maryah Sydnor hit two free throws at the 1:59 mark to make it a three-point game.
Still down by three, Frazier earned her fifth steal of the night with just over a minute remaining, giving the Terriers a chance to tie the score or cut the lead to one. Unfortunately, the possession resulted in a turnover and Katie Mallow hit a jumper with 33.1 remaining to make it a two-possession game. Senior Logan Morris took a close-range jumper that drew a lot of contact on the ensuing Terrier possession, but there was no foul called and the Mountaineers (8-12, 5-5 SoCon) held on to take the game by seven.
"I thought we played with a lot of passion for the entire 40 minutes," Wofford head coach Edgar I. Farmer, Jr., said. "We knew it was going to be a battle and it was going to be a physical game. I thought our team executed well and played hard. If a possession here or a possession there goes our way, it could have been a different outcome."
Rebounding was a big part of the outcome. Heading into the game, App State led the Southern Conference with 40.7 per game and a +6.7 margin. At halftime, Wofford (5-15, 3-7 SoCon) and App were level on the boards at 20 apiece and the game was tied at 19. In the second half, the Mountaineers outrebounded the Terriers by nine, 22-13, which helped them outscore Wofford 42-35.
Wofford was also hurt by a 0-for-13 mark from the 3-point line. More than a few of those attempts saw the ball rim in and out, including a potential game-tying trey from Ashton Fleming in the final minutes. The Mountaineers were able to connect on their few attempts, going 3-of-6 from long range.
Frazier shot 6-of-10 from the floor and was 13-of-14 from the free throw line, scoring 16 points in the second half. The 25 points were one shy of her career-high, which she set on Dec. 14 at Gardner-Webb. Frazier also ended the game with five steals, four rebounds and two assists, despite playing with a guard on her face to protect a nose injury she suffered last Monday against Elon.
"I thought she did a tremendous job of playing through that obstacle," Farmer added. "Having the mask on can obstruct your vision, but I thought she did a great job of staying aggressive and playing like she was not hurt. She still gave a great effort and it shows how dedicated she is to winning and how much she cares about her team."
Morris scored 12 points on 4-of-10 shooting following her career weekend in which she averaged 25.5 in wins over UNCG and Elon. The reigning SoCon Player of the Week also had three steals and two boards. Sophomore Khadijah Joyner led the Terriers with eight rebounds.
For Appalachian State, Maryah Sydnor earned a double-double with a team-high 20 points and game-high 13 rebounds. She only shot 4-of-13 from the floor but was 11-of-14 from the foul line, and filled up the stat sheet with four assists, one block and a steal. She was joined in double figures by KeKe Cooper, who had 14 points and nine boards.
Wofford clipped App State 36 percent (18-50 FG) to 35.7 percent (20-56 FG). Each side had 19 turnovers, and the Terriers held a 19-8 edge in points off turnovers and a 10-0 advantage in fast-break points. App got it back from their bench, which outscored Wofford's 31-10.
Saturday evening's game was close the whole way and had 13 ties and 13 lead changes. Wofford entered the weekend in a three-way tie for seventh place in the league standings after beating UNCG and Elon last weekend. App State was just a game ahead at 4-5.
A low-scoring first half started out in favor of Wofford. The Mountaineers picked up two quick fouls in the first 30 seconds and Frazier got her first steal and drove to the basket at the 18:51 mark to give Wofford the initial lead. It looked like the Mountaineers were going to dominate the boards with a 7-2 edge early on. Despite that, the Terriers were leading because App had already turned the ball over five times in the first four minutes, while Wofford had done so just once.
Both teams continued the scoring struggle. Morris tied the game at six and ended a 5:30 Terrier scoreless drought at the 11:41 mark. A minute later, Frazier came up with another steal and hit sophomore Chanel Stokes in stride for an easy layup to tie the game once more. The Terriers regained the lead on the next possession with a Frazier free throw and extended it to three, 11-8, after Frazier was good for two more.
Wofford then went another five minutes without scoring, allowing the Mountaineers to go on a 5-0 run. Sydnor earned a second-chance basket after collecting an offensive rebound underneath and Joi Jones drove to the bucket to put App State ahead 13-11 with less than six minutes remaining in the period.
Wofford put together a response, beginning with a turn-around jumper from Lauren Kirby to tie the score. Morris put Wofford back in front by sinking both ends of a 1-and-1 and, after Frazier was good on a drive to the basket and hit two more free throws, Wofford completed an 8-2 run with a 19-15 lead.
Neither team hit a field goal through the final three minutes of the opening half, but App State scored the last four points with four made free throws to tie the score at 19. Frazier led all scorers with nine points at the break, while Sydnor had seven points and five rebounds. Fleming headed Wofford's effort on the boards with four, and the team-rebounding margin was zero as both sides had 20.
Sydnor gave the Mountaineers a lead 13 seconds into the second half, but sophomore Aliyah Johnson got it going for the Terriers and scored six points in the first three minutes to put Wofford ahead by four, 27-23, forcing App State head coach Darcie Vincent to burn a timeout.
The Terriers remained in front until Cooper tied the game at 33 with a layup at the 11:39 mark. App took a one-point lead after Mia Marshall went 1-of-2 from the free throw line, and the lead proceeded to change hands five times over the next three minutes. Wofford gained a 3-point lead during the stretch, 39-36, but Jones hit a 3-pointer right in front of Frazier to tie the score. Cooper and Morris traded baskets to make it a 41-all tie with 7:41 to play.
Wofford's rebounding effort was paying dividends. The two sides were level at 26 boards each, but Appalachian State outlasted the Terriers in the final 10 minutes, posting a 16-7 edge on the glass. Though Wofford hung around, down just one with two minutes to play, it could not afford a missed basket. When a couple of crucial shots missed down the stretch, App State came up with the big-time rebounds, which helped in hang on.
The Wofford women's basketball team heads to Western Carolina on Monday. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.
