CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Wofford College rifle team finished fourth at the NCAA Qualifier event at The Citadel on Saturday. Wofford shot its highest ever air rifle, smallbore and aggregate scores during the event.
In aggregate scoring, Wofford, with 4444, finished behind NC State (4606), University of North Georgia (4531) and the Citadel men (4452). The Terriers defeated The Citadel for the first time ever, along with Georgia Southern and Alabama Birmingham. Wofford also defeated Clemson and Georgia Military in non-NCAA competition on Saturday.
Tommy McKelvey led team efforts with 577 in air and a career-best smallbore score of 571. McKelvey's score in the smallbore was the third highest in the match, defeating competitors from all schools except N.C. State. Jim Stanley (571 air/542 smallbore), Josh Mangan (563 air /525 smallbore), and Erin Lee (554 air/541 smallbore both career records) contributed to the Wofford effort. Nygia Bost also shot for the team with 534 air/514 smallbore scores.
The team will compete next in the SEARC Championships on March 8 at The Citadel.
