SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Sophomores Chanel Stokes and Ashton Fleming reached career numbers and four Terriers scored in double figures, but the Wofford women's basketball team suffered a setback to Furman, 80-72, on Saturday afternoon inside Benjamin Johnson Arena.

Wofford tried to overcome a 10-point first-half deficit and started the second half on a 10-1 run to make it a one-point game just two and a half minutes in. The Terriers hung around within three points of the lead for the next six minutes, but the Paladins used a 13-2 run to go up by 14 with 6:37 to play. One last Terrier push made it a six-point ball game with 2:10 left, but it was as close as it would get and Furman never trailed to earn its seventh league victory.

Stokes scored a career-high 21 points on 7-of-14 shooting for Wofford, while Fleming scored a career-high 14 and posted her second double-double with 10 rebounds. Seniors Logan Morris and Erin Frost scored 11 points apiece, with Morris contributing on the glass with eight boards.

It was all overshadowed by Furman's Brittany Hodges, who was 12-of-16 from the floor en route to career-highs of 32 points and 17 rebounds. Eight of Hodges' boards were on the offensive end, which helped the Paladins (13-10, 7-5 SoCon) end the game with a 36-30 advantage in the paint and 13-9 edge in second-chance points. Brigid Morrissey had a game-high six assists and four steals, also grabbing seven rebounds.

The Terriers shot 40.4 percent on the afternoon thanks to a 14-of-27 showing in the second half (51.9 pct.). The second-half outburst gave Wofford a chance after shooting 9-of-30 (30 pct.) in the opening half. Meanwhile, Furman ended the game shooting 49.2 percent (30-61 FG) and was just better than Wofford in the second half, shooting 14-of-26 (53.8 pct.)

The loss drops the Terriers to 5-17 overall, 3-9 in SoCon play, sitting ninth in the league standings. Furman entered the day tied with Appalachian State for third place, and earned sole possession as the Mountaineers were downed by league-leading Chattanooga.

Holli Wilkins got the scoring underway with the game's first points at the 19:23 mark and Morris brought the game to its only tie with a made jumper two possessions later. Furman then scored 11 straight points over a five-minute span to go up 13-2.

Stokes put the bleeding to a halt with her first bucket, but four Paladin points followed on baskets by Morrissey and Hodges to put Furman ahead by 13. The lead extended to 14, the largest of the half, at the 7:03 mark, 23-9, with the Terriers first-half shooting struggles looming large at just 3-of-20 (15 pct.).

The Paladins continued to lead by 14 with less than two minutes to play, but the Terriers were playing much better on offense, down 35-21. Freshman Kentra Washington drained a 3-pointer with under a minute to play in the half to cut the lead to 11 and two free throws by Logan Morris in the final 10 seconds cut it to a 10-point halftime deficit, 38-28.

Wofford shot 6-of-10 after beginning the game 3-of-20 to get itself back in it. Stokes, Frost and Washington led the Terriers with six points apiece, while Morris had five rebounds. For Furman, Hodges had 15 points and nine rebounds to help the Paladins shoot 16-of-35 (45.7 pct.).

Hodges bumped the Paladin lead to 11, making 1-of-2 free throws to get the second half started. Wofford's big run followed, scoring 10 straight points in less than two minutes. Fleming got it started with her lone made trey of the afternoon. After baskets by junior Lauren Kirby and Stokes, Fleming closed the run with a layup while drawing a foul from Sarah Durdaller to earn a three-point play, making the score 39-38 with 17:23 remaining.

Hodges and Morrissey were good for the game's next four points to give the Paladins some breathing room, but Frost buried a big three to cut it right back to two. The two sides went back-and-forth for the next four minutes with the lead continually bouncing from five to three.

Wilkins scored at the 11:24 mark to put Furman back in front by five, but this time the Terriers did not respond. Hodges hit two free throws two possessions later and a layup at the 9:38 mark to put the Paladins ahead by nine, 57-48. Frost interrupted the run with a pair from the line, but Janice Roberts, Hodges and Whitney Bunn all scored on three straight Furman possessions to increase the lead to 12. The Terriers forced a turnover on the next, but Michelle Merritt missed the front end of a 1-and-1 and Hodges put back a missed jumper from Bunn to make it a 14-point game, 64-51, with 6:22 remaining.

The Terriers went without a field goal from the 11:45 mark all the way until a Stokes layup with 4:04 on the clock. Wofford did make eight free throws during the span, but Furman was good for six field goals to build its lead. Down by 11, the Terriers scored five straight with a layup by Stokes and another and-1 by Fleming to make it a six-point game with 2:10 to play, but could not get any closer.

The Wofford women's basketball team has a week off until its next game, hosting Samford next Saturday at Benjamin Johnson Arena. Tip is scheduled for 2 p.m.
