Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader With Alcorn State

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team won both games of a doubleheader against Alcorn State on Saturday at Russell C. King Field. In the first game, the Terriers won 9-4 after scoring four runs in the fourth inning. Wofford scored seven runs in the sixth inning of game two on the way to a 12-2 win.

Wofford improves to 13-7 on the season and Alcorn State is 1-18 overall. The Terriers swept the three-game weekend series. In the second game, Wofford stole 12 bases, breaking the school single game record of eleven that had stood since 1981. 

In the first game, Josh Hyman opened the bottom of the first with a double. He moved to third on a ground out and then scored on a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead.  The Braves left one on base in the top of the second. Wofford loaded the bases on a walk and two singles in the bottom of the second. A sacrifice fly by Carson Waln scored one run and an RBI single by Josh Hyman gave the Terriers a 3-0 advantage.

An RBI double by Demetrius Jennings drove in Conor Clancey from first base in the bottom of the fourth inning for a 4-0 lead. After the Braves were retired in order, Dylan May doubled and Carson Waln walked to open the bottom of the fourth. A bunt single by Matt Kaskow added a run and Alec Paradowski walked with the bases loaded to score a run. Seth Neely added a sacrifice fly for a 7-0 lead. With Josh Hyman at third and Alec Paradowski at first, a double steal added a run to make it 8-0 after four innings.

The Braves got on the board in the top of the fifth inning with an RBI single by Edgardo Salas to make it 8-1. In the bottom of the sixth, Alec Paradowski led off with a triple. He scored when Eric Brenk reached first base on an error for a 9-1 lead. After a scoreless seventh inning, Alcorn State added a run on a ground out for a 9-2 score. Wofford left two runners on base in the bottom of the eighth. In the top of the ninth, the Braves had four singles and scored two runs before the last batter struck out for a 9-4 final score.

Wofford pitcher Luke Leftwich (2-1) threw seven innings and allowed only one run on four hits with nine strikeouts. Elliot Lance went one inning with one run scored on one hit and one strikeout. Jacob Condra-Bogan threw the ninth and gave up two runs on four hits with two strikeouts.

Alcorn State starter Daniel Belmont (0-3) went three innings and allowed six runs on six hits. Charles Wilson threw an inning with two runs scored on two hits. Colton Laird went the final four innings and allowed one run on four hits with two strikeouts.

In the second game, the Braves opened with a single and an RBI single by Scotty Peavey made it a 1-0 game. In the bottom of the first, Josh Hyman led off with a single. Alec Paradowski singled and Hyman moved to third on a throwing error. On a double steal, Hyman was safe at home and Paradowski was safe at second. After a couple of walks, a fielder's choice by Eric Brenk scored a run for a 2-1 lead. The Terriers left the bases loaded to end the first after two more walks.

Alcorn State had the first batter of the second inning reach on an error. A double by Edgardo Salas scored the run to tie the game at 2-2. Wofford regained the lead in the bottom of the second as Matthew Kaskow led off with a walk, stole second, and scored when Alec Paradowski reached on an error. An RBI single by Eric Brenk scored Paradowski from third later in the inning for a 4-2 advantage.

After the Braves were retired in order in the top of the third, Matt Ramsay led off with a solo home run to left for a 5-2 lead. There was no scoring in the fourth and fifth innings. In the bottom of the sixth, the Terriers blew the game open with seven runs scored on five hits. Demetrius Jenning, Matt Kaskow, Seth Neely, and James Plaisted all had RBIs in the inning, as only two of the seven runs were earned.

Both teams were retired in order in the seventh inning. Wofford left one runner on base in the bottom of the eighth after a double by Bryce Anglin. Alcorn State had one runner reach base on a hit by pitch in the top of the ninth, but a strikeout ended the game with a 12-2 final score.

Wofford starter Connell Anderson (1-1) threw a career-high seven innings and gave up just two runs (one earned) on five hits. He had five strikeouts and did not allow a walk in earning his first career win. Merritt Huber went the eighth inning and did not allow a hit with one strikeout. Eric Eck threw the ninth and had one strikeout.

Alcorn State starter Danny Corona (0-5) went five innings and allowed five runs on four hits. He struck out two and issued eight walks. Jesus Vasquez faced two batters and allowed two runs. Cedric Bell threw two-thirds of an inning with five runs allowed on five hits. Charles Aldridge went the final 1.1 innings and allowed one hit with one strikeout.
