Southern Conference Tournament Bracket
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Senior Logan Morris matched a career-high with 26 points on Senior Day, but Davidson put up 48 in the second half to run away from the Wofford women's basketball team, 83-67, Sunday afternoon in the regular season finale at Benjamin Johnson Arena.
The Terriers conclude the regular season 6-22 overall and 4-14 in Southern Conference play. Wofford will be the No. 9 seed in the SoCon Tournament and play No. 8 Georgia Southern in the tournament opener on Friday at 11 a.m. The first and second rounds will be contested at Kimmel Arena on the campus of UNC Asheville, with the semifinals and championship game to be played at the U.S. Cellular Center.
Morris and classmate Erin Frost were honored in pregame ceremonies on Sunday as Wofford's graduating class. The two played for the final time in Benjamin Johnson Arena and completed the game as Wofford's two leading scorers. Morris shot 8-of-18 to match the 26 points she scored on January 27 against UNCG, while Frost scored 11 and was 3-of-5 from three.
Wofford hung in with Davidson's hot shooting through the first half, trailing by just one, 35-34. The Wildcats escalated the pace in the second half and the Terriers fell behind by 10 for the first time after Laura Murray connected on a jumper with 13:55 remaining. Five straight Terrier points followed to cut the lead back to six, but Davidson retook a double-digit lead at the 9:26 mark on a Murray three and shot 63 percent in the half to earn the win.
Dakota Dukes had another career game to lift the Wildcats. Dukes scored a career-high 30 points when the two sides met in December, and she bested that mark on Sunday with 31 points, adding 10 rebounds to complete her ninth double-double of the season. She shot 10-of-17 from the field and collected 11 points at the free throw line.
Murray, Hannah Early and Shneeka Center joined Dukes in double figures. Murray shot 9-of-13 to net 19 points, while Early and Center had 11 and 10, respectively, each grabbing seven rebounds.
For the Terriers, sophomore Chanel Stokes joined Morris and Frost in double figures. Stokes scored 10 points and had a career-high seven assists at the point.
The regular season finale got off to an entertaining start with eight lead changes in the opening four minutes. Morris scored Wofford's first five points with a layup and 3-pointer. She then climbed to seven points in just three minutes with another lay-in and the Terriers led 11-10 after a Stokes basket, connecting on four of their first five shots.
Just as Morris was leading the Terrier effort, Dukes was doing the same for Davidson. She tallied nine of her team's first 14 points with just five minutes gone by.
Wofford sophomore Ashton Fleming tied the game at 14 with her one made three in the game following Dukes' ninth point. The two teams continued the torrid offensive pace until the Wildcats gained the first significant lead, 25-18, using a 6-0 run that concluded with another Dukes basket and 9:34 on the first-half clock. She then gave Davidson its biggest lead of the half, 28-20, dropping another basket in the paint.
Wofford put together a response and got back in the offensive groove. After the Terriers had not scored a field goal for nearly five minutes, Frost got it going with her first triple of the afternoon. Davidson regained a seven-point advantage with 4:47 to go in the half, but Wofford locked down on defense and outscored the opposition 7-0 over a four-minute span to tie the game at 34 with 30 seconds before the break. A Center free throw gave Davidson a one-point lead.
Morris and Dukes were even at 16 points apiece when the two teams headed for the locker rooms. Morris was 4-of-8 from the field and 7-of-10 at the foul line, while Dukes was shooting 5-of-9 and 6-of-8 at the stripe. Dukes and Fleming shared the game lead in rebounds with six each.
Davidson could not have gotten off to a better start in the second half. Dukes and Murray teamed for an 8-0 run to give their squad a nine-point lead just over two minutes in. Stokes broke the run by getting to the line and Frost brought it back down to five with her second 3-ball.
The Wildcat lead bounced from five to as many as 11 over the next five minutes. Wofford used a 7-2 run that concluded with a Stokes jumper at the 12:24 mark to make it a 54-48 ball game.
Counting the Stokes bucket, the Terriers were shooting 43 percent in the second half to keep pace with the Wildcats. The final 12 minutes, Wofford cooled off to shoot just 5-of-19 (26.3 pct.). On the other hand, Davidson went 8-of-11 (72.7 pct.) down the stretch, leading by as many as 20 with three minutes to play.
The Wofford women's basketball team begins the Southern Conference Tournament on Friday at 11 a.m., against Georgia Southern inside Kimmel Arena. The winner of the game moves on to play top-seeded Chattanooga (26-3, 18-0) on Saturday at noon.
