Baseball Falls 7-3 At Davidson

DAVIDSON, N.C. – After a three hour rain delay, the Wofford baseball team was defeated 7-3 by Davidson on Sunday afternoon at Wilson Field. The Wildcats scored four runs in the third inning on the way to the victory and secured the series win 2-1.

Wofford is 15-9 on the season and 1-2 in conference play. Davidson is 13-7 overall and 5-1 in the SoCon to sit in first place. The Terriers were led by Alec Paradowski with two hits, while Dylan May and James Plaisted each had RBIs. The Wildcats were led by Sam Foy with two hits and three RBIs.

In the top of the first, Wofford had a single by Alec Paradowski and a walk to Conor Clancey but both were stranded. Davidson left one on base in the bottom of the first. The Wildcats added a hit in the bottom of the second. Wofford had Alec Paradowski reach base on an error and Seth Neely was hit by a pitch in the top of the third inning but they were left on base.

Davidson had back-to-back singles with one out in the bottom of the third. A single by Ryan Lowe drove in one run and a wild pitch made it a 2-0 game. An RBI single from Sam Foy and sacrifice fly by Lee Miller pushed the lead to 4-0 after three complete innings.

Eric Brenk led off the top of the fourth with a walk. A double down the left line by James Plaisted scored Brenk for a 4-1 score. The Wildcats had a runner reach base on an error in the bottom of the fifth inning. A home run to right field by Sam Foy pushed the lead to 6-1. A lead-off walk to Conor Clancey in the top of the sixth was followed by a two-out RBI single by Dylan May to make it a 6-2 game. James Plaisted walked and a single by Matt Ramsay scored May for a 6-3 score in the middle of the sixth inning. Davidson was retired in order in the bottom of the sixth.

In the top of the seventh, Wofford left one runner on base. Jesse Morris struck out four batters in the bottom of the seventh, with one runner reaching on a wild pitch. After Wofford was retired in order in the top of the eighth, the Wildcats had a runner on third after an error and he scored on a sacrifice fly by Ben Arkin for a 7-3 score. With two outs in the top of the ninth, Alec Paradowski reached on an error. A fly ball ended the ball game.

Wofford pitcher Connell Anderson (1-2) started the first 4.1 innings and allowed five runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Jesse Morris went 2.2 innings and allowed one run on one hit with eight strikeouts. Will Stillman threw an inning and allowed one unearned run.

Davidson starter Nick Neitzel (3-0) went five innings and gave up two runs on two hits with six strikeouts. Cody White threw an inning with one run allowed on one hit. Ryan Lowe earned the save by going the final three innings without allowing a hit.

Next week Wofford travels to Gardner-Webb on Wednesday night before a weekend series at Western Carolina.
