Women’s Basketball Falls in First Round to Georgia Southern

Box Score Box Score (pdf)

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The ninth-seeded Wofford College women's basketball team saw its 2013-14 season come to a close on Friday, falling to eighth-seeded Georgia Southern, 75-62, in the first round of the 2014 Southern Conference Tournament inside Kimmel Arena.

Wofford never led, but hung around the entire game until Georgia Southern hit its free throws at the end to take the double-digit win. The Terriers just could not get open looks to fall, shooting 34.4 percent and going 5-of-24 (20.8 pct.) from three. The Eagles were held without a made triple the entire game (0-9), but shot 45.1 percent and outrebounded Wofford 44-36.

The Terriers end the season 6-23 overall with a 4-14 record in SoCon play. Meanwhile, Georgia Southern (10-20, 7-11 SoCon) will advance to face top-seeded Chattanooga (26-3, 18-0 SoCon) in the quarterfinals on Saturday at noon.

"We just could not get into a rhythm," Wofford head coach Edgar I. Farmer, Jr., said. "Our shots were not falling early and, in a single-elimination tournament, you need to see the ball go in a bit more. This team did a good job of competing and clawing back, but we just could not hit that shot to get us over the hump."

Every time the Terriers cut the margin down and gained momentum, they could not knock down some much needed shots. A four-point game at the 17:38 mark of the second half saw GSU extend the lead to 15, as the Terriers went just 1-of-11 over the next 10 minutes.

Senior Logan Morris hit a 3-pointer with less than four minutes to play to cut the deficit to seven. Georgia Southern didn't make a field goal the rest of the game, but converted 15-of-18 at the free throw line to close it out.

Sophomores Jordan Frazier and Chanel Stokes scored a team-high 17 points apiece. Frazier was about the only Terrier to have a good day shooting, going 7-of-12 (58.3 pct.) from the floor. Stokes was 5-of-13 and 6-of-7 at the line.

In what was her final game, Morris had 10 points to complete her career with 940, ranking No. 14 in the Wofford record books. She also completed her collegiate playing days with 43 double-figure scoring games, including 17 on the 2013-14 season.

For GSU, senior MiMi Dubose netted a game-high 20 points and was a perfect 8-of-8 at the free throw line. Junior Anna Claire Knight added 15, while sophomore Briana Jones had 12 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. Freshman Angel McGowan scored 11 off the bench. Senior Danielle Spencer was also a presence on the glass with 10 boards.

DuBose got it going seven seconds into the first game of the 2014 Southern Conference Tournament. She drove the ball to the basket off the opening tip and completed a 6-0 Eagle run at the 18:20 mark, stealing a pass from Stokes and driving to the basket for a fast-break lay-in.

Frazier got Wofford on the scoreboard with her first take to the basket at the 17:48 mark. Stokes followed suit and got fouled on the way, converting a 3-point play to quickly cut the lead down to one.

Ahead 8-6, Georgia Southern put together the first big run of the day. The Eagles outscored Wofford 14-4 over the next seven minutes to go ahead 22-10, grabbing their largest lead of the half.

The Terriers got GSU in foul trouble around the 10-minute mark and clawed back. Knight and McGowan each picked up their second fouls and Morris got a run going with one of her two treys of the game. Frazier buried a three at the 7:16 mark and after freshman Kentra Washington went 1-of-2 at the line, the Terriers were back within five, 26-21.

GSU bumped the lead back to nine but could not shake loose. On the final possession of the half, Stokes missed a 3-point attempt, but Frazier collected the offensive board and drove through the lane to convert as time expired.

Wofford trailed 37-30 at the break with Frazier leading all scorers at 11 points. DuBose had half of her 20 points to go along with three first-half steals.

Frazier picked up right where she left off to start the second half, hitting a lay-in 14 seconds in to make it 37-32. A Stokes triple made it a four-point game at the 17:38 mark, 39-35.

Wofford went cold, not converting another field goal for five minutes. It helped GSU go on a 15-2 run, grabbing their largest lead of the game, 52-37, with 9:14 to play.

The Terriers gave it one final push. Over the next six minutes, Wofford went on a 16-8 run, capped by Morris' 3-pointer to make it 60-53 with less than four minutes remaining. Stokes and Morris combined to score 10 of Wofford's 16 points.

It never got any closer. Wofford missed on consecutive possessions and fouled the Eagles to try and get back in the game. GSU converted at the line and earned a spot in Saturday's quarterfinals.
