Baseball Falls 10-9 To Elon

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team was defeated 10-9 by Elon on Friday night at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers scored seven runs in the fifth inning to take the lead, but with the game tied in the eighth Elon hit a two-run homer for the lead. A solo home run by Seth Neely in the bottom of the ninth made it a one run game for the final score.
 
Wofford is 19-16 on the season and 2-8 in the Southern Conference. Elon is 22-12 overall and 8-5 in league play. The Terriers were led by Alec Paradowski with two hits and two RBIs, while Eric Brenk had two RBIs and score two runs. Sebastian Gomez led the Phoenix with three RBIs on the night.
 
Elon had singles in the top of the first and top of the second. In the bottom of the second, Eric Brenk walked with one out. After Brenk moved to second on a ground out, a double by James Plaisted to left field drove in the first run of the game. With one out in the top of the third, a walk and three straight singles gave Elon a 2-1 lead.
 
The Terriers left one on base in the bottom of the third and the Phoenix stranded one in the top of the fourth inning. Wofford had one hit in the bottom of the fourth. Elon led off the top of the fifth with back-to-back singles and had the bases loaded with one out. A single by Sebastian Gomez drove in two runs and a two-out double from Tyler McVicar added two more runs for a 6-1 lead. Nick Zammarelli had an RBI single to make it 7-1 in the middle of the fifth.
 
In the bottom of the fifth Wofford loaded the bases with two singles and a hit by pitch. A ground out by Josh Hyman plated one run and a double to center field by Alec Paradowski drove in two runs to make it a 7-4 game. A catcher's interference and a walk to Conor Clancey loaded the bases with one out. A single to left field by Eric Brenk added two runs for a 7-6 score. A wild pitch and throwing error allowed Conor Clancey to score from second and tie the game. A sacrifice fly by Matt Ramsay gave the Terriers an 8-7 lead after five innings.
 
Elon loaded the bases with one out in the top of the sixth on three walks. A fielder's choice by Sebastian Gomez drove in a run to tie the game at 8-8. A strikeout ended the top of the sixth with the bases loaded. The Terriers left runners on the corners in the bottom of the sixth. Elon left one runner on base in the top of the seventh.
 
Wofford led off the bottom of the seventh with a double by Conor Clancey, but three straight outs ended the inning. In the top of the eight, Casey Jones hit a one-out triple. On a fielder's choice, he was out at home. With two outs, Chris King hit a two-run homer over the left field fence to give Elon a 10-8 lead.
 
In the bottom of the eighth, Wofford was retired in order. Elon left two runners on base in the top of the ninth. With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Seth Neely hit his fifth home run of the season to make it a 10-9 game. Eric Brenk walked with two outs, but was caught stealing to end the game. It marked the first loss in a one-run game this season for the Terriers, who are now 7-1 in contests decided by a lone run.
 
Wofford pitcher Luke Leftwich went 4.2 innings and allowed seven runs on eleven hits with five strikeouts. Jacob Condra-Bogan threw a third of an inning and allowed one run. Will Stillman (2-1) went three innings and gave up two runs on two hits with four strikeouts. Connor Foltyn faced one batter and Spencer Kulman went an inning without allowing a hit along with a strikeout.
 
Elon starting pitcher Lucas Bakker threw 4.1 innings with eight runs scored on seven hits and three strikeouts. Matt Harris (2-0) went 3.2 innings and did not allow a run on three hits with one strikeout. Ryan Pennell earned his tenth save of the season by allowing one run on one hit with two strikeouts in the ninth inning.
 
The Terriers continue the series against Elon on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at King Field.
