Burkert Earns All-Conference on Final Day of SoCon Championships

Final Results

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Senior runner Alyssa Burkert finished second in the final for the 800 meter run earning her a spot on the All-Conference team as the Wofford men's and women's track and field teams completed competition in the 2014 Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Sunday.

Burkert is Wofford's first individual to earn All-Conference honors for medaling since Mike McCrimon in 2011 and is the first female to earn the honor since Crystal Belcher in 2006. She is also only the fourth women's track and field athlete to be named to an All-Conference team since 1998.

Burkert led the way for the Terriers as she ran in the 800 meter final steeplechase with a time of 2:08.86, as she just barely missed a first place finish by 0.33 of a second. Marie Demedicis of Samford finished in first in the event with a time of 2:08.53.
Wofford hosted the Southern Conference Championships for the first time at the Viking Sports Complex at Spartanburg High School. It was the 90th annual Outdoor Track and Field Championship for the men and the 28th annual for the women.

In the overall team standings, the women's team finished 10th of 11 teams and the men tied for eighth of nine teams. Samford University swept both the men's and women's team titles to earn their first Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field championship since joining the league in 2008.

The Terriers had many highlights during the championship as they set three school records, had multiple athletes achieve personal records on day one and had several earn All-Conference honors.

In addition to Burkert on the women's side, the Wofford 4x100 meter relay team that consisting of senior Katie Kessler, freshman Faith Jewkes, sophomore Sloane Brandon and junior Jordan Burke set the school record with a time of 53.24 seconds. Also senior Sam Hughes competed in the 5000 meter run finishing in 13th in the finals.

In the field events, freshman Emily Williams competed in the shot put, javelin throw and discus during competition. She earned All-Freshman team honors for the javelin throw on day one. Freshman Taylor Hall earned All-Freshman team honors for the discus.

Leading the way for the men, James Hayworth tossed a personal record distance of 37.22 meters in the discus throw. Senior Andrew McCurry competed in his final track meet as a Terrier and set a personal record of 46.99 meters in the javelin throw on day one.

The 2014 Southern Conference Championships conclude the outdoor season for the Wofford men's and women's track and field teams. The Terriers finish the season setting three school records for the men's team and four for the women's team. The men broke school records in the 800 meter and 1500 meter runs, and in the 4x400 meter relay. The women set school records in the 3000 meter run, the 3000 meter steeplechase, the 400 meter hurdles and the 4x100 meter relay.
