Baseball Falls 13-4 To Appalachian State

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, the Wofford College baseball team was defeated 13-4 by Appalachian State at Russell C. King Field. The game was tied after four innings, but the Mountaineers scored five runs in the fifth inning and added five runs in the eighth inning on the way to the victory.
 
Wofford is 17-14 on the season and 1-7 in the Southern Conference. Appalachian State is 11-19 overall and 5-2 in the league. The Terriers were led by Seth Neely and Derek Hirsch, both with two hits. Dillon Dobson had seven RBIs on three hits to lead the Mountaineers.
 
The Mountaineers left one runner on base in the top of the first. Josh Hyman led off the bottom of the first with a triple down the right line. A single up the middle by Alec Paradowski gave Wofford a 1-0 lead. Appalachian State loaded the bases with one out in the top of the second inning. An infield single with two outs tied the game at 1-1, but a fly ball left the bases loaded. Wofford was retired in order in the bottom of the second.
 
In the third inning, both teams were retired in order. After Appalachian State was retired in order in the top of the fourth, Seth Neely reached on an error but was caught stealing second and Eric Brenk was stranded after a two-out single. In the top of the fifth, the Mountaineers had three straight singles and scored one run for a 2-1 lead. With two outs and the bases loaded, a grand slam home run by Dillon Dobson pushed the lead to 6-1.
 
Wofford left two runners on base in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Mountaineers led off the sixth with a triple. An RBI single up the middle by Jaylin Davis made it a 7-1 game. Wofford got one run back on a lead-off solo home run by Seth Neely for a 7-2 score after six complete innings.
 
Appalachian State left one runner on base in the top of the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh, Matt Ramsay led off with a walk and Derek Hirsch singled but the Terriers were unable to score a run. The Mountaineers added a run on an RBI double in the top of the eighth. Dillon Dobson hit a single that scored two runners as they took a 10-2 lead. A double from William Head drove in two more runs for a 12-2 advantage.
 
In the bottom of the eighth, Dylan May led off with a double and Matt Pelt singled. A fielder's choice by Kody Ruedisili scored May to make it a 12-3 score. Appalachian State added one run in the top of the ninth on an RBI double by Dillon Dobson to take a 13-3 lead. In the bottom of the ninth, the Terriers had runners on the corners when a fielder's choice by Matt Kaskow drove in a run for a 13-4 game. A strikeout ended the game.
 
Wofford pitcher Luke Leftwich (3-3) went 4.2 innings and allowed six runs, two of them earned, on nine hits. He struck out three and issued two walks. Merritt Huber threw a third of an inning and did not allow a hit. Chris Sheehan went a third of an inning and allowed one run on two hits. Spencer Kulman worked two innings and had three strikeouts while allowing four runs on four hits. Jordan Accetta went two-thirds of an inning with one run allowed on two hits. Elliot Lance threw the ninth and gave up one run on two hits with one strikeout.
 
Appalachian State starter Tyler Moore (6-2) threw seven innings and allowed two runs on ten hits with four strikeouts. Dallas DeVrieze went the final two innings and gave up one run on one hit with two strikeouts.
 
The Terriers complete the series against Appalachian State on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Next week Wofford will visit Old Dominion for a pair of games on Tuesday and Wednesday before returning home to host Elon.
