Box Score Game Box (pdf)NORFOLK, Va. – The Wofford College baseball team scored three runs in the top of the ninth to win 4-1 at Old Dominion on Tuesday night at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex. The Terriers and Monarchs were tied at 1-1 after six innings, but Wofford came up with three runs in the ninth for the road victory.
Wofford is 19-14 on the season. Old Dominion is 19-14 overall in their first season as a member of Conference USA. The Terriers were led by Josh Hyman, Eric Brenk, and Luke Feisal with two hits each. The Monarchs had two hits from Ben Slaton.
The Terriers opened the game with a double down the left line by Josh Hyman and Alec Paradowski walked. A double play and a strikeout ended the scoring opportunity. The Monarchs had two hits in the bottom of the first, but a double play ended the inning. Wofford left one on base in the top of the second inning and Old Dominion was retired in order in the bottom of the second.
After Wofford was retired in the top of the third, the Monarchs left one on base in their half of the third. Seth Neely led off the top of the fourth with a walk and Eric Brenk had a one-out single. A two-out single by Luke Feisal scored Neely to give the Terriers a 1-0 lead, but Wofford left two runners on base. Old Dominion was retired in order in the bottom of the fourth inning.
In the top of the fifth, the Terriers added a single by Josh Hyman but he was stranded. The Monarchs led off the bottom of the fifth with a walk. They had runners at second and third with two outs, but a fly ball ended the fifth inning. Conor Clancey began the sixth inning with a single to left field but was unable to advance. Old Dominion had a one-out single in the bottom of the sixth. A wild pitch and single gave the Monarchs runners on the corners with two outs. A wild pitch allowed the runner from third to score and tie the game at 1-1 before a strikeout ended the sixth inning.
The Terriers were retired in order in the top of the seventh. Old Dominion led off the bottom of the seventh with a double. A pair of walks loaded the bases with two outs, but a pop fly ended the seventh inning. Wofford went down in order in the top of the eighth and Old Dominion stranded one runner in the bottom of the eighth.
Eric Brenk led off the top of the ninth with a single to right field and Matt Ramsay walked. A bunt single by Luke Feisal loaded the bases. A one-out pinch hit single by James Plaisted made it a 2-1 score. With the bases still loaded and two outs, Alec Paradowski hit a ball to right field that was dropped and two runs scored for a 4-1 lead. The Monarchs opened the bottom of the ninth with a single. A strikeout, fly ball, and strikeout ended the game.
Wofford pitcher Connell Anderson went 6.1 innings and allowed one run on six hits with four strikeouts. Jacob Condra-Bogan worked a third of an inning with two walks. Connor Foltyn (1-0) went 1.1 innings without allowing a hit to earn his first career win. Eric Eck struck out two in the ninth for his eighth save of the season.
Old Dominion starting pitcher Tommy Alexander went 3.2 innings with one run allowed on four hits and three strikeouts. Sam Sinnen threw 2.1 innings and did not allow a run on two hits with one strikeout. Dean Ali went two innings without allowing a hit and struck out four. Connor Overton (0-1) threw the ninth and allowed three runs on three hits with one strikeout.
Wofford will wrap up the two-game series against the Monarchs on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. The Terriers return home to host Elon on Friday at 6:00 p.m. in the first game of a weekend series.
