Baseball Falls 2-0 To Samford

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team was defeated 2-0 by Samford on Friday night at Russell C. King Field in the opening game of a three-game series. The Bulldogs had a no hitter broken up in the bottom of the ninth by a pair of singles, but earned the shutout.
 
Wofford is 28-26 on the season and 10-14 in the Southern Conference. Samford is 32-22 overall and 15-10 in league play, clinching the third seed with the victory. The Terriers had hits from Matt Ramsay and Eric Brenk and left eight runners on base in the game. Matt Milburn recorded seven strikeouts in the start for Wofford. Tripp Martin had a two-run homer to account for Samford's scoring.
 
The Bulldogs led off the game with a double, but the runner was caught stealing third base. Wofford was retired in order in the bottom of the first. With two outs in the top of the second, Samford had back-to-back singles but the inning ended with a runner caught stealing third. Matt Ramsay led off the bottom of the second by reaching on an error, but a double play and line out ended the inning.
 
Both teams were retired in order in the third inning. After Samford went down in order in the top of the fourth, Alec Paradowski led off by reaching second base on a throwing error. Three straight ground outs ended the fourth inning. With two outs in the top of the fifth, Brandon Powell struck out swinging but reached first on a wild pitch. Tripp Martin then hit his tenth home run of the season for a 2-0 lead.
 
Eric Brenk led off the bottom of the fifth with a hit by pitch and Josh Hyman walked. They advanced on a double steal, but were left on base. Samford was retired in order in the top of the sixth. Alec Paradowski walked to lead off the bottom of the sixth, but was caught stealing second.
 
In the top of the seventh, the Bulldogs left one runner on base after an error. Matt Ramsay was hit by a pitch to open the bottom of the seventh. Eric Brenk walked and a sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position, but a strikeout and fly ball ended the scoring chance. The Bulldogs two singles in the top of the eighth inning, but a runner out stealing home and a pop-up ended the inning for Samford.
 
The Terriers had Alec Paradowski on base after a walk with one out, but he failed to advance. The Bulldogs left one on base in the top of the ninth. Wofford broke up the no-hitter when Matt Ramsay singled up the middle to open the bottom of the ninth. Eric Brenk followed with a single, but two fly balls and a strikeout ended the game. It was the first time this season the Terriers have failed to score a run in a game.
 
Wofford starting pitcher Matt Milburn (4-5) went 7.1 innings and gave up two runs on five hits. He struck out seven and did not issue a walk. Connor Foltyn allowed one hit. Will Stillman threw the final 1.2 innings and did not allow a hit with one strikeout.
 
Alex Ledford (10-2) started for Samford and went four innings without allowing a hit along with one strikeout. Jared Brasher threw two innings and did not allow a hit with two strikeouts. Parker Curry went two innings and had two strikeouts without allowing a hit. Alex Gracia allowed two hits in the ninth, but had one strikeout to earn his 13th save of the season.
 
Wofford and Samford will complete the regular season with a double header on Saturday afternoon starting at 2:00 p.m. Prior to the first game, the Terriers will honor the seven seniors on this year's squad.
