Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader Against Samford

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team took both games of a doubleheader against Samford on Saturday afternoon at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers won the first game 6-5 and took the second game 10-2. With the series win, Wofford has earned a #6 seed and a bye for the upcoming Southern Conference Tournament.
 
Wofford is 30-26 on the season and 12-14 in the Southern Conference. Samford is 32-24 overall and 15-12 in league play. The Bulldogs scored four runs in the opening inning of the first game, but the Terriers took a lead on a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh by Josh Hyman to earn the win. In game two, the Terriers jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings and added five runs in the eighth on the way to the series win. Wofford has now won four straight SoCon series.
 
Prior to the first game, the Terriers honored this year's senior class – Eric Brenk, Eric Eck, Luke Feisal, Josh Hyman, Matthew Kaskow, Jesse Morris, and Seth Neely. With 30 wins, Wofford has tied the school record for wins in a season (1991 and 2007). The team has also secured a winning record for the first time since 1992 (19-17).
 
In the first game, the Bulldogs led off with six straight hits to plate four runs before three straight outs ended the top of the first. The Terriers had a double from Seth Neely with one out in the bottom of the first and he moved to third on a ground out. He scored on a wild pitch to make it a 4-1 game. Singles by Eric Brenk and Josh Hyman, along with a walk by Conor Clancey loaded the bases, but all three runners were stranded to end the first inning.
 
The Bulldogs left one on base in the top of the second. Derek Hirsch reached on an error to lead off the bottom of the second. Alec Paradowski walked and then with two outs a single by James Plaisted drove in Hirsch for a 4-2 score. Samford added a hit in the top of the third, but stranded the runner. Wofford was retired in order in the bottom of the third and the Bulldogs had one hit in the top of the fourth.
 
In the bottom of the fourth, Derek Hirsch reached on an error and Alec Paradowski singled to give Wofford runners on the corners with one out. On a double steal, Hirsch was safe at home to cut the lead to 4-3. The Bulldogs had two runners on base in the top of the fifth, but a double play ended the scoring chance. Wofford was retired in order in the bottom of the fifth and the Bulldogs went down in order in the top of the sixth.
 
Bryce Anglin led off the bottom of the sixth with a pinch hit single. Carson Waln pinch ran and moved to second on a ground out. A double to shallow left field by Alec Paradowski with two outs scored Waln to tie the game at 4-4. The Terriers left two runners on base at the end of the sixth. Samford had two runners reach base in the top of the seventh but back-to-back strikeouts ended the half.
 
Wofford opened the bottom of the seventh with a single by Eric Brenk. Josh Hyman then hit a blast over the fence in left center to give the Terriers a 6-4 lead. It was the sixth home run of the season for Hyman. The Bulldogs led off with a double in the top of the eighth and had the bases loaded with two outs. A line-up to the shortstop ended the scoring chance with all three runners stranded. The Terriers left one on base in the bottom of the eighth.
 
The Bulldogs made it a 6-5 game with a solo home run by Drew McWhorter to lead off the ninth inning. Two strikeouts and fly ball to left field ended the game with Wofford earning the win,
 
Wofford starting pitcher Connell Anderson threw five innings and allowed four runs on nine hits with two strikeouts. Luke Leftwich worked 1.1 innings and allowed one hit with one strikeout. Eric Eck (2-3) went the last 2.2 innings and gave up one run on three hits with five strikeouts. It was his school-record 87th career appearance, topping the 86 by J.D. Osborne set last season.
 
Cole Limbaugh started for Samford and went 3.1 innings with three runs allowed on five hits. Mark Donham worked 2.2 innings with one run allowed on two hits and three strikeouts. Mikel Belcher (1-1) threw an inning and gave up two runs on two hits with one strikeout. Patrick McGavin went the final inning and did not allow a hit with two strikeouts.
 
In game two,
the Bulldogs left one runner on base in the top of the first. Wofford led off the first with back-to-back walks. James Plaisted reached on an error and one run scored on the play. Josh Hyman then hit a double that scored two runs and Wofford had a 3-0 lead. In the second, the Bulldogs had one on base before a double play ended the top half.
 
The Terriers loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the second inning. A single by James Plaisted drove in two runs for a 5-0 lead. In the top of the third, the Bulldogs had a single, but the runner was stranded.  Wofford left one on base in the bottom of the third and Samford was retired in order in the top of the fourth.
 
Wofford loaded the bases with a single and two hit by pitch in the bottom of the fourth inning. After Samford was retired in order in the top of the fifth, Eric Brenk led off the bottom half with a single. Three strikeouts ended the fifth inning. The Bulldogs left one on base in the top of the sixth inning and the Terriers stranded two in the bottom half of the sixth.
 
In the top of the seventh, the Bulldogs got on the board with a solo home run by Brandon Haarer. Wofford had one hit in the bottom of the seventh. Samford added a run in the top of the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Danny Rodriguez to make it a 5-2 game. The Bulldogs struck out to end the top half with one runner on base. Kody Ruedisili led off the bottom of the eighth by being hit by a pitch. With one out, Seth Neely singled and moved Ruedisili to third. A fielder's choice bunt by James Plaisted scored Ruedisili for a 6-2 lead. A single by Matt Ramsay loaded the bases and a single by Josh Hyman drove in two runs to push the score to 8-2. Conor Clancey added an RBI single for a 9-2 advantage with two outs. Derek Hirsch reached on an error that scored a run for a 10-2 lead.
 
Wofford starting pitcher Jesse Morris (8-6) went 6.2 innings and gave up only one run on three hits with six strikeouts. Jacob Condra-Bogan worked an inning and gave up one run with one strikeout. Connor Foltyn struck out the lone batter he faced. Will Stillman went the final inning with two strikeouts.
 
Cody Pugh (4-5) started for Samford and went two innings allowing five runs on three hits with one strikeout. Chase Traffica gave up one hit and had one strikeout in an inning. Alex Milazzo threw an inning and allowed one hit with one strikeout. Charles Terry worked two innings and allowed two hits with four strikeouts. Gage Pregno went an inning with one hit allowed and two strikeouts. Patrick Maronde, Phillip Flach, and Luke Leeth combined to throw the eighth inning and gave up five runs on four hits with two strikeouts.
 
Wofford will begin the Southern Conference Tournament on Wednesday night at 8:00 p.m. against Samford. This marks the first time the Terriers have played in the tournament since 2008 and will be the highest seed since the 2002 season.
