Box Score Game Box (pdf)CHARLESTON, S.C. – In the opening game of the weekend conference series, the Wofford College baseball team was defeated 8-1 by The Citadel at Riley Park on Friday afternoon. The Bulldogs used a 3-run homer in the third inning to take the lead and they never trailed.
Wofford is 23-23 on the season and 5-13 in the Southern Conference. The Citadel is 19-26 overall and 5-16 in league play. Conor Clancey scored the lone run for the Terriers on a solo homer in the fifth inning. Tyler Griffin had a three run homer in the third inning to lead the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs left one runner on base in the bottom of the first inning. After Wofford was retired in order in the top of the second, Calvin Orth hit a double with one out but did not advance. Kody Ruedisili had a single in the top of the third, but was stranded. In the bottom of the third, the Bulldogs led off with back-to-back singles. With two outs, a home run by Tyler Griffin gave the Bulldogs a 3-0 advantage.
Wofford had a two-out double by Seth Neely in the top of the fourth inning, but was left on base. With one out in the bottom of the fourth, The Citadel had three straight singles to load the bases. A fielding error allowed a run for a 4-0 score and a bases loaded walk made it a 5-0 game at the end of four innings.
Conor Clancey led off the top of the fifth inning with a solo home run over the wall in left center field. It was his fifth home run of the season for a 5-1 score. The Citadel answered with a solo home run by Drew DeKerlegand to open the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-1 lead. The Bulldogs had runners on the corners after an error and single and plated a run on a sacrifice fly for a 7-1 through five innings.
In the top of the sixth, Matt Ramsay led off with a single, but a double play cleared the bases. Seth Neely added a single but did not advance. The Bulldogs were retired in order in the bottom of the sixth. Dylan May had a pinch-hit double in the top of the seventh but was stranded at third.
The Citadel led off the bottom of the seventh with a batter hit by pitch. With the runner at third and two outs, a wild pitch scored a run for an 8-1 lead at the end of seven innings. In the top of the eighth, Matt Ramsay added a single but was left on base. The Bulldogs left one on base in the bottom of the eighth. In the top of the ninth, the Terriers were retired in order to end the game.
Wofford starting pitcher Jesse Morris went five innings and gave up seven runs on nine hits with three strikeouts. He is now tied for third in school history with 240 career strikeouts with George Lehr (1999-2002). Connor Foltyn worked an inning and gave up one run with one strikeout. Spencer Kulman went the final two innings and gave up only one hit with two strikeouts.
Logan Cribb started for The Citadel and threw his second complete game of the season. In nine innings, he allowed one run on eight hits with six strikeouts.
The Terriers continue the series in Charleston on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
