CHARLESTON, S.C. – In the 2014 Southern Conference Tournament, the Wofford baseball team was defeated 4-2 by Samford at Riley Park. The Terriers had an 8-5 advantage in hits, but the Bulldogs were able to capitalize on two Wofford errors to earn the win. The Terriers will face The Citadel on Thursday.

Wofford is 30-27 on the season and are the #6 seed. Samford, the #3 seed, is 33-24 overall. The Terriers had the go-ahead run at the plate in the top of the ninth, but were unable to score a run. Josh Hyman led the team with two hits, including a single that drove in two runs. Samford was limited to only five hits by the Wofford pitching staff, as Matt Milburn went seven innings with four strikeouts.

"I thought this was a really well-pitched game," said head coach Todd Interdonato. "They had some good at bats on their side and we had some good ones on ours. It's a tough loss to take. We made the error in right and then had a wild pitch to give them their first two runs. That was tough to get behind like that. Their guy (Alex Ledford) has been solid down the stretch and we put good at bats on him, but it seemed like every time we had one at bat where I thought we could flip the momentum, he was able to make a good pitch and get our guys out."

The Terriers opened the game with a single up the middle by Alec Paradowski, but a double play and ground out ended the top of the first. The Bulldogs were retired in order in the bottom of the first. Wofford had a bunt single by Josh Hyman with one out in the second inning, however a double play ended the top half. Samford led off the bottom of the second with a hit by pitch. A double play and ground out ended the second inning.

After Wofford was retired in order in the top of the third, Samford had a single to start the bottom of the third. An error and sacrifice bunt gave the Bulldogs runners at second and third. A ground out by T.J. Dixon drove in the first run of the game and a wild pitch allowed a second run to score. The Terriers had back-to-back singles by Seth Neely and James Plaisted in the top of the fourth. A single by Matt Ramsay loaded the bases with one out. A single to left field by Josh Hyman drove in two runs to tie the game at 2-2, but a double play ended the top half.

The Bulldogs began the bottom of the fourth with a single and followed with a double. Back-to-back sacrifice flies made it a 4-2 lead for Samford. Wofford had Kody Ruedisili reach second base on a throwing error and was on third with two outs. Alec Paradowski walked and stole second, but a pop fly ended the scoring chance with the runners stranded.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Bulldogs added a single but stranded the runner at third base. Wofford was retired in order in the top of the sixth inning and Samford left one on base after an error in the bottom of the sixth. Derek Hirsch hit a double with two outs in the top of the seventh, but was left on base. Samford had a single in the bottom of the seventh and the runner was caught stealing second to end the inning.

Alec Paradowski led off the top of the eighth with a walk and he moved to second on a passed ball. Three straight ground outs ended the scoring chance. The Bulldogs were retired in order in the bottom of the eighth inning. Eric Brenk reached base in the top of the ninth on a hit by pitch. Conor Clancey singled with one out, but a strikeout and fielder's choice ended the ball game.

Wofford starting pitcher Matt Milburn (4-6) threw seven innings and allowed four runs, only two of which were earned. He gave up five hits and struck out four without issuing a walk. Connor Foltyn struck out the lone batter he faced. Will Stillman went the final two-thirds on an inning with a strikeout.

Alex Ledford (11-2) started for Samford and went eight innings allowing two runs on seven hits. He recorded three strikeouts to earn the win. Andres Gracia threw the ninth inning with two strikeouts and one hit allowed to record his 14th save of the season.
