Baseball Comes Back For 5-4 Win Over UNCG

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth, a single by Alec Paradowski propelled the Wofford College baseball team to a 5-4 win over UNCG on Friday night at Russell C. King Field.  The Spartans led 4-1 after seven innings, but the Terriers tied it at four in the eighth inning. The comeback was complete in the bottom of the ninth to give Wofford a win in the first game of the weekend series.
 
Wofford is 26-25 on the season and 8-13 in the Southern Conference. UNCG is 21-22 overall and 8-11 in league play. The 26 wins for the Terriers are the most since the 2007 season. Alec Paradowski and James Plaisted each had two hits for Wofford, while Conor Clancey had a 2-run homer. Sean Guite led the Spartans with two hits.
 
The Spartans and Terriers both had singles in the first inning. In the second inning, both teams were retired in order. UNCG stranded two runners in the top of the third inning and Wofford went down in order in the bottom half.
 
In the top of the fourth, the Spartans loaded the bases after a single, hit by pitch, and a walk. Back-to-back RBI singles gave UNCG a 2-0 lead and two runners were left on base. The Terriers had singles from James Plaisted and Matt Ramsay in the bottom of the second with two outs. With the runners on the corners, a double steal scored a run for a 2-1 game.
 
UNCG left one runner on base in the top of the fifth inning and the Terriers were retired in order in the bottom of the fifth. Both teams were retired in order in the sixth inning. In the top of the seventh, the Spartans had runners on second and third with one out. A single by Eric Kalbfleisch drove in both runners for a 4-1 lead and the Spartans left two runners on base at the seventh inning stretch.
 
The Terriers were retired in order in the bottom of the seventh. The Spartans led off the top of the eighth with a single, but the runner was stranded at second. Eric Brenk was hit by a pitch to open the bottom half of the eighth. Conor Clancey then hit a ball over the left field fence to cut the lead to 4-3. Alec Paradowski walked and Seth Neely reached on a catcher's interference. A single to right center by James Plaisted drove in a run to tie the game at 4-4. The Terriers left two runners on base at the end of the eighth.
 
After the Spartans were retired in order in the top of the ninth, the Terriers had two runners on base after a single by Eric Brenk and a walk by Conor Clancey. A walk to Matthew Kaskow with two outs loaded the bases. With a full count, Alec Paradowski drove a single to shallow right field that scored Brenk for a 5-4 win.
 
Wofford starting pitcher Jesse Morris threw 6.1 innings and allowed four runs on six hits. With three strikeouts on the night, Morris moves into third place in school history with 243 career strikeouts. Connor Foltyn worked a third of an inning and gave up one hit. Jacob Condra-Bogan went a 1.1 innings and gave up one hit with one strikeout. Will Stillman (4-2) threw the ninth and did not allow a hit with one strikeout.
 
Ryan Clark started for UNCG and went 7.2 innings with three runs allowed on four hits and four strikeouts. Tyler Frazier (1-2) threw the final inning and gave up one run on three hits with one strikeout.
 
Wofford and the Spartans continue the series on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
