Related LinksUSC Upstate Fall Classic Final Standings SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College women's tennis team thrived in doubles play at the USC Upstate Fall Classic, with two teams reaching the championship round of their respective draws.
Junior Mareli Sanchez and sophomore Emily Erickson were victorious, winning the doubles Green back draw, beating Upstates' Nona Ruppert and Sharlee Desmukh 8-6, before defeating Presbyterian's Britanny Nuttall and Demi Henschell 8-4 to win the draw.
Sophomore Kalli Karas and freshman Lauren Reid played their way to the final round of the doubles Green draw by beating UT Chattanooga's Rachele Gazzola and Katie Polk 8-4 in the first round before besting Gardner-Webb's Yasmin Doost and Rokia Sacko 8-6 to make their way to the final. The duo of Karas and Reid would eventually fall, 8-3, to Chattanooga's Kayla Jones and Samantha Caswell.
The Terriers saw some success in singles action as well, with sophomore Taylor Carlson and freshman Samantha Russell earning first round wins in their draws. Carlson defeated Sara McBride of Presbyterian College 6-2, 6-2 in the White back draw. Russell advanced to the second round of the Black draw after earning a 6-0, 6-3 win over Upstate's Nina Roell. Russell would play Chattanooga's Kelsey Coots, dropping a 6-2, 6-3 decision to the eventual draw champion.
The women's tennis team will have time to reenergize, taking a week off before heading to Blacksburg, Virginia next weekend. The Terriers will compete in the Virginia Tech Invitational on October 3-5.
