SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College men's and women's cross country teams ran at the USC Upstate Invitational on Saturday morning at Milliken Park. In heavy rain and on a sloppy course, the women finished seventh overall, while the men were eighth.
The women's 5K competition started things off and
Anya Bunao was the first Terrier to cross the finish line at 20:03.76 in 37
th place.
Marella Angello (20:07.24) and
Rebeka Fadgyas (20:30.00) were next for Wofford.
Alexandra Forster and
Sarah Spiro also scored for the Terriers. Also running were
Jamie Barnett,
Chandler Washburn,
Breck Peterson, Halee Rogrs,
LeAndrea Combo,
Rebeka Parent,
Alexandra Christopoulos, and
Morgan Schweers.
Alex Michaels ran the top time for the Terriers, finishing at 27:45.00 in 36th place in the men's 8k race.
Ryan Doyle was the second finisher for the Terriers at 27:50.50 to place 37
th.
Cisco Ferre (28:11.53),
Cristian Widenhouse (28:12.27), Joe Harbevich (28:40.68) and
Jonathan Rice (28:52.13) rounded out the top six scorers for Wofford.
Dane Szalwinski,
Ben Hensley,
Ben Boatwright,
Jurdan Mossburg, and William Stutts aslo ran for the Terriers.
"I think we competed really well considering the conditions," said head coach
Johnny Bomar. "We didn't have great times, but you don't expect to have great times in this weather. They ran well as a group. With one more meet to go until the conference championship, we have some people fighting for a spot."
High Point won the men's race with 28 points. In the women's competition, Appalachian State took first place with a total of 47 points. The meet originally had 32 teams scheduled to compete, however several did not attend due to the weather.
Both the men's and women's teams will be back in action on Saturday, October 16 at the College of Charleston Classic. The Southern Conference Championship will be October 31 at Furman University.
