Cochran, Young Highlight SoCon Postseason Awards

Cochran Player of the Year, Young Coach of the Year, Skinner & Collins All-SoCon

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Senior Karl Cochran was named Southern Conference Player of the Year and Mike Young was selected SoCon Coach of the Year, highlighting a group of four Wofford Terriers to earn the league's postseason men's basketball honors released on Tuesday.

Cochran joined fellow Terrier and classmate Lee Skinner, as well as junior Spencer Collins on the league's all-conference teams. The coaches selected Cochran and Skinner to the 10-member, all-conference team. The media placed Cochran on its first team, Skinner on its second team and Collins on the third team.

Cochran became the first Terrier in history to be named Player of the Year by both the coaches and media – Noah Dahlman, the school's all-time Division I scoring leader (2,013 points), was named Player of the Year by the coaches in 2009-10. Cochran's senior campaign saw him average 15 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.0 blocks through the regular season. All five of those marks rank among the top 12 in the league, including No. 5 in scoring and No. 2 in steals.

It was a season of historical accomplishments for Cochran. He broke Drew Gibson's school record for steals in the Division I era with his 214th on February 12. Last Thursday at Mercer, he broke Ian Chadwick's all-time program record for career 3-pointers, knocking down his 300th and moving into sole possession of fourth place in SoCon history.

A native of Marietta, Georgia, Cochran reached double figures 25 times this season, including a career-high 33 points in Wofford's win at Chattanooga on January 5. He was named SoCon Player of the Week twice (Nov. 25, Jan. 27).

Young was named SoCon Coach of the Year for the third time in six years (2010, 2014). Both the coaches and media selected Young as the league's top coach after leading Wofford to its most regular season wins and SoCon wins in school history. The Terriers were tabbed the preseason favorite and Young led Wofford to its third regular season championship, including its first outright title in history.

Senior Lee Skinner and junior Spencer Collins rounded out the Terriers to earn postseason honors. Skinner was named an all-conference member by the coaches and a second-team pick by the media. Meanwhile, Collins earned third-team media honors, marking the first all-conference honors of his career.

Skinner led the Terriers on the glass in the regular season, averaging 6.0 rebounds, including 4.3 on defensive end. The Lombard, Illinois native ranks ninth in the SoCon in rebounding and sixth on the defensive boards. On top of that, Skinner ranked eighth in the league at 48.7-percent shooting, and averaged a shade under 10 points per game. He reached 1,000 career points at Cameron Indoor Stadium on New Year's Eve against then-No. 2 Duke, becoming the 44th Terrier in history to hit the milestone. Skinner secured a team-high three double-doubles and scored a season-high 17 points in the regular season finale at Furman, helping the Terriers clinch their first outright title.

Collins was a frequent double-figure scorer this season, averaging 11.2 points to rank second on the team and 21st in the SoCon. The Easley, South Carolina product shot over 40 percent from three and drained a career-high four triples en route to a career-high 26 points in last Thursday's win at Mercer. He also became the 45th member of Wofford's 1,000-point club.

The Terriers get the 2015 Southern Conference Tournament, presented by General Shale, underway on Saturday. The No. 1 seed, Wofford begins the tournament in the quarterfinals against the winner of Friday's first-round matchup between eighth-seeded UNCG and ninth-seeded Samford. Tip is scheduled for noon at U.S. Cellular Center in Asheville, N.C.
