Mareli Sanchez Earns Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship

SKILLMAN, N.J. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced its regional awards on Tuesday morning, with Wofford women's tennis junior Mareli Sanchez earning the Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship for the Carolinas region.

Sanchez joins teammate senior Audrey Coventry, who won the award last year, as second Terrier to ever earn the distinction. Sanchez will be up against the 11 other regional winners for the national award.

"I'm just so proud of Mareli," said third-year head coach Krissy Hall. "She's a class act on the court, works hard and competes to the fullest - all with great sportsmanship. She's the same off the court, and is great to work with."

The ITA/Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship goes to a Division I women's player who displays inspiring dedication and commitment to her team, which has enhanced her team's performance and exemplified the spirit of college tennis. It dates back to 1997 and is memory of the late Penn women's tennis coach Cissie Leary.

Hall also won the award in 2002 for the East region during her time at Virginia Tech. "It's exciting to share the award with members of the team," Hall said. "I stress the importance of sportsmanship frequently, and I'm glad to see the girls buying into that."
