CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Wofford College men's and women's cross country teams competed at 2016 Southern Conference Championship on Saturday morning at Camp Jordan in Chattanooga. The women tied for fifth place and the men finished in sixth place, the highest ever finishes for the Terriers.

The men's 8k race was held first and
Cisco Ferre led the Terriers with a 21
st place finish in 25:02.06. His finish was the second-highest ever for a Terrier, behind Trey Parker's 18
th place in 2009, and his time was the fastest ever for a Wofford runner in an 8k race. He was followed by
Cristian Widenhouse at 38
th in 25:34.27 (also eclipsing the previous 8k school record),
Jack Zemp in 26:27.32,
Jonathan Rice at 26:27.53,
Ethan Epstein in 26:47.43,
Walker Gibbs at 26:54.04, and
Ben Boatwright at 26:55.08.
Dane Szalwinski and
Joe Harbacevich also competed for the Terriers.

In the women's 5k race,
Taryn Schoen was the first Terrier to cross the finish line in 18:17.48 for 24
th place. Her time was the fastest for a Wofford runner in the eveÂnt since 2011 (Alissa Williams, 18:11.50). She was followed by
Shannon McAndrew at 18:35.79 for 30
th place.
Anya Bunao had a 18:38.86,
Mary Stewart Wilson was at 18:41.22,
Sommer McKenzie at 19:32.68,
Anna Lyles at 19:50.70
Alexandra Christopoulos at 19:52.55 and
Jamie Barnett at 20:17.16.

For the men, the previous best finish was eighth place in 2015 with 216 points. The women's previous best finish was eighth in 2015 and 2013, while the point total of 171 was the lowest in school history.

Overall, Furman won both the men's and women's races. In the women's team competition, Furman earned 24 points to take first. Samford checked in second with 47 points, while ETSU finished third with 111 points. Chattanooga (113), UNCG and Wofford (171), Western Carolina (176), VMI (195), Mercer (201) and The Citadel (266) completed the women's scores.

Furman claimed first-place in the men's team competition with 22 points. Samford placed second with 51 points and ETSU took third with 93 points. Chattanooga (113), VMI (117), Wofford (218), Western Carolina (219), UNCG (220), The Citadel (221) and Mercer (271) rounded out the men. Â
