SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to come from behind for a 9-8 win over Stony Brook on Saturday afternoon at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers had a three-run homer by
Brett Hash to tie the game and added three more runs for a 9-6 lead after seven. Stony Brook added two runs in the eighth inning, but
Will Stillman closed the door for the victory.
Wofford opens the season 2-0 for the second straight year. Stony Brook, which advanced to the 2012 College World Series and the 2015 NCAA Tournament, is 1-1 on the year.
Brett Hash led the team with three hits and three RBIs, while
McClain Bradley and
Max McDougald each had two hits and two RBIs.
Adam Scott had eight strikeouts in the start, while
John Caskey earned the win for the Terriers and
Will Stillman had the save. The Seawolves had four players with two hits each.
In the first inning, the Seawolves had one hit, while the Terriers had a pair of hits from
Kody Ruedisili and
Brett Hash. Stony Brook had runners on the corners in the top of the second inning with two outs. A double by Jeremy Giles and a triple by Toby Handley gave the Seawolves a 3-0 lead in the middle of the second inning.
The Terriers were retired in order in the bottom of the second inning. Stony Brook added a run with a two out single by Dylan Resk to make it a 4-0 contest. Wofford had the bases loaded on a pair of walks and a hit by pitch in the bottom of the third inning. A single through the right side by
McClain Bradley drove in two runs to cut the lead to 4-2 at the end of the third frame.
Stony Brook was retired in order in the top of the fourth inning. With two outs in the bottom of the fourth,
Alex Malsch singled and stole second base.
Alec Paradowski walked and then both runners advanced on a double steal. A single by
Max McDougald scored Malsch, while Paradowski was thrown out at the plate to end the fourth inning with a 4-3 score.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Seawolves were retired in order.
Brett Hash hit a single through the left side with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning, but was unable to advance. Stony Brook was retired in order in the top of the sixth inning. Wofford left one runner on base in the bottom of the sixth after
Alex Malsch walked.
The Seawolves had back-to-back singles to open the seventh inning. After a sacrifice bunt advanced the runners, a single by Jack Parenty drove in both for a 6-3 lead. The bases were loaded when a strikeout sent the game to the seventh inning stretch. Wofford led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk to
Max McDougald and
Kody Ruedisili reached on an error.
Brett Hash then hit a 0-2 pitch for his first home run as a Terrier, clearing the fence in left center to tie the game at 6-6.
McClain Bradley added a single and a single by
Cody Miller gave Wofford runners on the corners. A wild pitch scored Bradley to give Wofford a 7-6 lead. An infield ground out by
Demetrius Jennings plated another run for an 8-6 score, while
Max McDougald had an RBI single up the middle for a 9-6 score at the end of the seventh inning.
A single and walk led off the top of the eighth inning for the Seawolves. With one out, a single by Andruw Gazzola drove in one run for a 9-7 score. A wild pitch allowed another run to score before a fly ball and ground out ended the top half with Wofford leading 9-8. The Terriers left one runner on base in the bottom of the eighth inning. In the top of the ninth inning, a pair of ground outs and a strikeout ended the game.
Wofford starting pitcher
Adam Scott threw five innings with four runs allowed, only one of which was earned. He struck out eight batters and issued one walk, while giving up six hits.
Elliot Lance worked an inning with two runs allowed and a strikeout.
Austin Higginbotham made his first collegiate appearance and gave up one hit in a third of an inning.
John Caskey (1-0) earned his first career win by going two-thirds of an inning with two strikeouts.
Spencer Kulman gave up two hits and two runs in a third of an inning.
Will Stillman recorded his second save of the season by going the final 1.2 innings without allowing a hit.
Cameron Stone started for the Seawolves and went four innings with three runs allowed on five hits. Stone struck out three batters and also walked three. Chad Lee (0-1) threw two innings with five runs allowed on four hits and three strikeouts. Bret Clarke went two-thirds of an inning with one run allowed, while Tim Knesnik threw the final 1.1 innings with one hit allowed.
The Terriers will conclude the opening weekend on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. against George Mason at Russell C. King Field.
