Baseball Falls To UNCG 6-1

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Saturday afternoon, the Wofford College baseball team was defeated 6-1 by UNCG at Russell C. King Field. The Spartans scored twice in the second inning and added three runs in the fifth, while holding the Terriers without a hit until the sixth inning. The series is tied heading into Sunday's contest.
 
Wofford is 27-22 overall and 9-8 in the Southern Conference. UNCG is 34-14 on the season and 12-5 in league play. The Terriers were held to four hits, with Kody Ruedisili driving in the lone run on a double in the seventh inning. UNCG was led by Collin Woody with three hits, including a double and a home run.
 
The Spartans led off the game with a single, but the runner was picked off and back-to-back strikeouts ended the top of the first. Wofford was retired in order to end the first inning. The second inning began with a Spartan being hit by a pitch. A walk and a hit by pitch loaded the bases with one out. A single through the left side scored two runs before a double play ended the top half. Cody Miller drew a walk with two outs, but was stranded at second base to end the inning.
 
In the top of the third inning, the Spartans had a pair of singles but both were left on base. Alec Paradowski walked with two outs in the bottom of the third, however was unable to advance. Both teams were retired in order in the fourth inning. With one on base and one out in the top of the fifth, Dillon Stewart hit a home run for a 4-0 lead. Collin Woody added a solo home run with two outs for a 5-0 advantage in the middle of the fifth inning.
 
A double play ended the top half of the sixth inning. Demetrius Jennings singled to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning and moved to second on a ground out. He was stranded at second to end the sixth frame. The Spartans were retired in order in the top of the seventh. Dylan May led off the bottom of the seventh with a single and McClain Bradley walked with two outs. A double to the corner in left by Kody Ruedisili scored May for a 5-1 score. Demetrius Jennings walked to load the bases, but a strikeout left three runners stranded.
 
The Spartans left one runner on base in the top of the eighth inning and the Terriers were retired in order in the bottom of the eighth. In the top of the ninth, UNCG led off with a walk. The runner moved to third on a stolen base combined with an error, and scored on a wild pitch for a 6-1 lead. With two out in the bottom of the ninth, McClain Bradley singled. He moved to second on a wild pitch, but a strikeout ended the game.
 
Wofford starting pitcher Jacob Condra-Bogan (5-4) worked five innings with five runs allowed on seven hits, along with seven strikeouts. Spence Kulman threw the remaining four innings and gave up one run on two hits, plus two strikeouts.
 
Matt Frisbee (4-3) started for UNCG and allowed one run on three hits in 6.2 innings. He did not allow a hit in the first five innings and recorded four strikeouts. Andrew Wantz earned his second save of the season by going the final 2.1 innings with one hit allowed and three strikeouts.
 
The Terriers and Spartans will conclude the series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. After taking the week off for exams, Wofford will return to the field on Thursday night at 6:00 p.m. against East Tennessee State.
