CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Wofford men's tennis team split its first two matches of the season on Saturday afternoon at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill.
 
The Terriers took down Bucknell, 4-1, before falling to UNC, 4-0 in their second match of the day.
 
"Today was a great start to what will be an exciting season," coach Rod Ray said. "It was great to compete against a quality opponent like UNC. Beating Bucknell was not an easy task and I'm impressed with our intensity and our composure under pressure."
 
In the team's match against Bucknell, Haris Poric defeated Daniel Wright (6-3, 6-1) from the number one position. The team also received a two-set victory from Jack Thomas in the no. 6 spot, as he took care of Max McDonald (6-3, 6-1). Wofford took their third singles match when Max Palmer retired against Lucas Cerbelli in the second set.
 
The Terriers took control by taking a couple of close doubles matches on tiebreakers. Haris Poric and Julian Chousa partnered to win their doubles match, 7-6 (7-5). Lucas Cerbelli and Trevor Gotkowski won their doubles match by the same score.
 
In the team's second match of the day, the ninth-ranked Tar Heels were too much for the Terriers, taking the match, 4-0.
 
Up next, the Terriers will host their first match of the season, as they take on North Carolina A&T on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 12 p.m.
