SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College men's and women's cross country teams competed at 2017 Southern Conference Championship on Saturday morning at Milliken Park in Spartanburg. The women, led by SoCon Freshman of the Year
Hannah Steelman, were tied for fifth and the men finished in eighth place.

The women's 5k race was held first and
Hannah Steelman was the first Terrier to cross the finish line in 16:57.6 for sixth place. Her time was a new school record in the 5k, nearly 30 seconds faster than her previous record. Steelman also became the first Wofford women's cross country runner to earn Freshman of the Year honors and the first to earn All-Southern Conference first team honors. She was followed by
Mary Stewart Wilson (19:03.2),
Anya Bunao (19:10.1),
Shannon McAndrew (19:13.7),
Rebeka Fadgyas (19:26.9),
Taryn Schoen (19:31.5) and
Sommer McKenzie (19:32.0). Also running for Wofford were
Madison Paraskeva and
Jamie Barnett.

In the men's 8k race,
Cisco Ferre led the Terriers with a 22
nd place finish in 25:53.3. His time was the seventh-fastest ever for a Wofford runner in an 8k race. He was followed by
Jack Zemp (26:53.6),
Cristian Widenhouse (27:20.1),
Ben Hensley (27:30.5),
Joe Harbacevich (27:33.4),
Ben Boatwright (27:49.9) and
Ethan Epstein (28:04.3).
Ford McCoy and
Walker Gibbs also competed for the Terriers.

Overall, Furman won both the men's and women's races. In the women's team competition, Furman earned 23 points to take first. Samford was second with 43 points and ETSU third at 97 points. Chattanooga (141), UNCG (168), Wofford (168), Western Carolina (195), Mercer (212), VMI (214) and The Citadel (253) rounded out the field.

Furman claimed first-place in the men's team competition with 15 points. ETSU placed second with 61 points, followed by Samford (78), Chattanooga (120), VMI (160), UNCG (195), Western Carolina (200), Wofford (211), The Citadel (225) and Mercer (233).
