SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's tennis team was defeated by Stetson, 4-1, on a windy Wednesday afternoon at Reeves Tennis Center.
The loss moves the Terriers to 9-5 on the season, while it is just the second time the team has lost at home.
After the Wofford team of
Jack Thomas and
Lucas Cerbelli took their no. 3 doubles match, 6-3, the Hatters responded by winning the final two matches to take the doubles point. Stetson claimed the point with a 7-5 win by Angus Bradshaw and William Shkrob in the no. 2 position.
Stetson continued its momentum by taking the first match in singles play, as Loic Blanco defeated
Haris Poric, 6-1, 6-1, to give the Hatters a 2-0 advantage. Moments later, the Hatters' Angus Bradshaw won his match, 6-2, 6-3, in the no. 3 position to put them within one win of clinching the match.
In the no. 6 singles match, sophomore
Kyle Barr put the Terriers on the board with a 6-3, 6-1 victory.
However, the Hatters closed out the match in the no.4 spot, when Pierre Fossier took two straight tiebreakers to defeat
Julian Chousa, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-4).
The match may have ended earlier, but Cerbelli battled back to take the second set, 6-4, after losing the first, 6-3. His match against Graham Ball ended unfinished. In the no. 4 spot,
Jack Thomas also rallied to take the second set after dropping the first set, but his match also ended unfinished in the third.
Up next, the Terriers will head to the road for their Southern Conference opener, as they take on UNCG this Saturday, March 11, at 11 a.m.
