SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College men's and women's cross country teams competed on Saturday in a pair of meets. At the Greater Louisville Classic at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer Park,
Hannah Steelman was second overall to lead the Terriers. The team also ran at the Upstate Invitational.
In Louisville, the meet began with the men's 8K race.
Jack Zemp was the top finisher for the Terriers with a time of 26:23.9 Also competing were
Cisco Ferre,
Ford McCoy,
Jack Moody,
Josh Hendry and
Ben Boatwright. The women's 5K race followed and
Hannah Steelman set a new school record in the event at 16:38.5 to finish second overall. Her previous school record was 16:59.40 set last season.
Jamie Barnett,
Sommer McKenzie,
Mary Stewart Wilson,
Rebeka Fadgyas,
Shannon McAndrew and
Anna Lyles also ran for the Terriers.
At the Upstate Invitational held at Milliken Park in Spartanburg, the women's 5K started the morning and
Madison Paraskeva was the first Terrier to cross the finish line. Also competing were
Whitley Elsass,
Mia Girardi,
Anastasia Burroughs and
Ashley McCreary. The men's 8K competition was next and freshman
Beck Classey led the team with a time of 28:18.5.
Nick Butler,
Dane Szalwinski,
Joe Harbacevich and
Walker Gibbs also competed for Wofford in the event.
The strong field competing in Louisville included Kentucky, SMU, Louisville, Michigan, Cincinnati, Rice, Vanderbilt, Memphis, Mississippi State, and Auburn. On the women's side, the Terriers finished ahead of Southern Conference teams UNCG and ETSU. Dorcas Wasike of Louisville won the women's race, as she earned ACC Performer of the Week honors twice this season and was the runner-up at the 2017 ACC Championships.
Both the men's and women's teams will be back in action on Friday, October 12 at the VertCross Invitational hosted by High Point University. The Southern Conference Championship will be on Saturday, October 27 at Western Carolina.
