SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team wrapped up fall practice last week with the Black and Gold World Series. The Black team, led by assistant coaches
Seth Cutler-Voltz and
J.J. Edwards, won two games for the series victory.
In the first game, the contest ended after six innings in an 8-8 tie. The Gold team took a 1-0 lead on an RBI double by
Josh Congdon. A single by Trey Yunger drove in a run for the Black team to tie the game. In the bottom of the second inning,
Brett Rodriguez hit a grand slam to give the Black team a 4-1 advantage. A three-run homer by Ryan Galanie cut the lead to 5-4 in the top of the fourth inning, but another home run by Rodriguez gave the Black team a 7-4 lead after four innings. An RBI double by
Colin Davis in the top of the fifth inning made it a one-run game and Davis scored later in the frame to tie things up at seven.
Andrew Orzel had an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth for an 8-7 lead for the Black team. The Gold team tied things in the top of the sixth with an RBI single from
Ethan Cornelius. The Black team was unable to score in the bottom of the sixth and the game ended in an 8-8 tie.
The Gold team took an early lead in the second game on an RBI triple from
John Dempsey.
Mike Brown drove in
Brett Rodriguez to tie the game at 1-1 and a sacrifice fly by
Andrew Orzel gave the Black team a 2-1 advantage.
Alec Cargin scored
Brennen Dorighi on a safety squeeze for a 3-1 lead. The Black team added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning for a 5-1 final score.
In the deciding game on Saturday afternoon, the Black team jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning with a sacrifice fly by
Andrew Orzel and RBI singles from Trey Yunger and
Brennen Dorighi. The Gold team got one run back on an error in the second inning. In the fourth inning the Gold team plated a pair of runs to tie the game at 3-3. The Black team regained the lead in the fifth at 4-3, which proved to be the final margin.
Brett Rodriguez was named the Black and Gold World Series MVP.
"We took a really good step forward this fall," said assistant coach
J.J. Edwards. "The older guys were able to bring along the younger guys and show them the Wofford culture. We are excited about watching their continued progress this spring."
Overall in fall practice,
Brett Rodriguez was the fall MVP for the position players. Position players of the week included
John Dempsey,
Brennen Dorighi (twice),
Lawson Hill,
Hudson Byorick and
Matty Brown. Dalton Rhadans was the top ranked pitcher of the fall, followed by
Reece Maniscalco and
Rasesh Pandya.
Scottie Wallace and
Matt Ellmyer were the break-out performers of the fall on the pitching staff.
The Terriers' regular season will begin at King Field on Friday, February 14, 2020, against Binghamton University.
