Hannah Steelman Wins 2019 SoCon Cross Country Championship

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Wofford College men's and women's cross country teams competed at 2019 Southern Conference Championship on Saturday morning at Pine Oak Golf Course in Johnson City. Wofford's Hannah Steelman was the individual champion for the women for the second straight season. The women were fifth overall and the men were ninth.
 
"It was a tough race in muddy conditions but Hannah came through with the victory," said head coach Johnny Bomar. "She did a great job in managing the course. We have some work to do to improve the team results, but overall it was a successful season."
 
The women's 5k race was held first and Steelman posted a time of 17:02.08. She finished three seconds ahead of the second-place finisher from Furman, earning All-Southern Conference and Runner of the Year honors. Taryn Schoen was next across the line for Wofford in 19:31.65 for 29th place. She was followed by Sommer McKenzie (19:44.70), Mary Stewart Wilson (20:02.60), Annie Mayfield (20:07.21) and Anna Lyles (21:46.52) to round out team.
 
In the men's 8k race, Josh Hendry led the Terriers with a 44th place finish in 27:50.65. He was followed by Ford McCoy (28:19.40), Jack Zemp (28:22.63), Palmer Haigler (28:43.82), Beck Classey (28:51.72) to complete the scorers. Collin Bertram and Walker Gibbs also competed for Wofford.  
 
Overall, Furman won both the men's and women's races. In the women's team competition, Furman earned 20 points to take first. Samford was second with 86 points and UNCG was third at 91 points. East Tennessee State (115), Wofford (139), Chattanooga (158), Western Carolina (184), VMI (221), Mercer (224) and The Citadel (247) rounded out the field.
 
Furman claimed first-place in the men's team competition with 21 points. ETSU placed second with 56 points, followed by Samford (92), VMI (106), UNCG (127), Chattanooga (166), Mercer (182), Western Carolina (224), Wofford (246) and The Citadel (285).
