Baseball Wins Season Opener 2-0 Over Ohio

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team opened the 2019 season with a 2-0 win over Ohio University on Friday night at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers scored twice in the first inning and held the Bobcats scoreless for the victory.
 
Wofford opens the season 1-0, while the Bobcats are 0-1. It was the first shutout for the Terriers since April 2, 2017 at Villanova. Colin Davis had a double and drove in two runs to lead Wofford, while Mike Brown and Alec Cargin each had two hits. Austin Higginbotham did not allow a run and had four strikeouts for the win. The Bobcats were led by Trevor Lukkes with two hits.
 
In the top of the first inning, the Bobcats left two on base after a hit by pitch and single. Andrew Orzel led off the bottom of the first with a hit by pitch. Alec Cargin had a hit-and-run single to move Orzel to third base. Colin Davis doubled to right center to drive in both runs for a 2-0 advantage. The Bobcats and Terriers were both retired in order in the second inning.
 
Ohio led off the third with a single, but the runner was caught stealing. The Bobcats added a single and a double, however the runners were stranded in scoring position. Alec Cargin singled with two outs in the bottom of the third. In the top of the fourth, Ohio had a pair of singles but was unable to score. With one out in the bottom of the fourth, Lawson Hill had a double down the right field line. A fielder's choice and strikeout ended the inning.
 
The Bobcats were retired in order in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, Mike Brown doubled for Wofford. Andrew Orzel singled, but a double play ended the fifth frame. In the sixth and seventh innings, both teams were retired in order. After the Bobcats went in order in the top of the eighth, the Terriers led off the bottom half with a single by Mike Brown. He was caught stealing second base and a pop-up and ground ball ended the inning.
 
In the top of the ninth with two outs, the Bobcats had a single to left field and an infield single. A fly ball to center was caught by Colin Davis to end the game.  
 
Austin Higginbotham (1-0) started for the Terriers and went six innings without allowing a run on six hits. He struck out four batters and did not issue a walk. Anthony Garcia earned the save, the sixth of his career, by going the final three innings with two hits allowed and three strikeouts.
 
Ohio starter Kenny Ogg (0-1) went five innings with two runs allowed on six hits, along with four strikeouts. Eddie Kutt threw three innings with one hit allowed and a strikeout.
 
The Terriers and Bobcats will continue the weekend series on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. with a doubleheader, as rain is expected on Sunday.
