Baseball Walks-Off With 10-9 Win Over Radford

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team scored on a single in the bottom of the tenth inning to take a 10-9 win over Radford on Sunday at Russell C. King Field. After six innings, Wofford held an 8-4 advantage. Radford scored three runs in the seventh inning and two in the eighth to gain the lead at 9-8. The Terriers tied it up in the bottom of the eighth. In the tenth, a single by Brett Rodriguez drove in the winning run for the Terriers.
 
Wofford opens the season 3-2, while the Highlanders are 2-4. The Terriers were led by Brett Rodriguez with three hits and two runs scored, Alec Cargin had a three-run homer and Hudson Byorick had two hits and three RBIs. The Highlanders had eight hits by eight different players, with Adam Whitacre driving in two runs.
 
The first three batters for Radford walked and a sacrifice fly plated a run. An RBI single added a run, but the bases were left loaded in middle of the first as the Highlanders had a 2-0 lead. Wofford left one runner on base in the bottom of the first inning. In the top of the second inning, the Highlanders added a run on a sacrifice fly for a 3-0 advantage.
 
The Terriers opened the bottom of the second with a walk to Hudson Byorick and a single by Alec Cargin. They advanced on a sacrifice bunt and a double down the right line by Reed Massey drove in both runners to make it a 3-2 game. With Massey on third after a ground out, an infield single by Andrew Orzel drove him in to tie the game at 3-3. The Terriers left two runners on base to end the second inning and the Highlanders stranded one in the top of the third.
 
Brett Rodriguez singled to lead off the bottom of the third inning. Hudson Byorick added a single for runners on first and third. Alec Cargin cleared the fence in right field for his first home run of the season as the Terriers took a 6-3 lead. After Radford was retired in order in the top of the fourth inning, the Terriers left a pair of runners in scoring position to end the frame.
 
The Highlanders left runners on second and third in the middle of the fifth inning. Wofford was retired in order to end the fifth. With one out in the top of the sixth, David Bryant hit a solo home run to cut the lead to 6-4. The Terriers had two outs in the bottom of the sixth when Colin Davis doubled and stole third. Brett Rodriguez walked and then stole second. A single by Hudson Byorick drove in both runners to give Wofford an 8-4 lead at the end of six innings.
 
In the top of the seventh inning, the Highlanders had two runners on base after a single and a walk when back-to-back singles with two outs drove in both runners to make it an 8-6 game. A walk loaded the bases and a hit by pitch plated a run, but a pop up ended the inning with three runners stranded. Nolen Hester doubled to lead off the bottom of the seventh. Matty Brown pinch ran and moved to third on a wild pitch, but was out at home on a fielder's choice by Mike Brown. Mike Brown reached third on a failed pick-off attempt and Andrew Orzel was hit by a pitch. Orzel stole second, but a ground out ended the seventh.
 
The Highlanders had runners at first and second with one out after a pair of walks in the top of the eighth inning. A wild pitch advanced the runners and another walk loaded the bases. A fielding error allowed a run to score and the game was tied at 8-8. With the bases still loaded, a sacrifice bunt plated a run to give Radford a 9-8 lead. Colin Davis led off the bottom of the eighth with a walk. An error on a bunt by Brett Rodriguez gave Wofford runners on the corners. Hudson Byorick had a ground out that scored Davis to tie the game at 9-9. The go-ahead run was stranded at third base to end the inning.
 
Radford was retired in order in the top of the ninth inning. Mike Brown reached first base on an error with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but a double play sent the game to extra innings. The Highlanders left one on base in the top of the tenth after a hit by pitch. Wofford led off with a single by Lawson Hill. Matt Pagano came in as a pinch runner and Colin Davis walked. With the infield in, Brett Rodriguez showed bunt, but pulled back for a single through the left side to score Pagano for a 10-9 win.
 
Hayes Heinecke started and went 1.1 innings with three runs allowed on one hit, while striking out two.  Jake Hershman threw 4.1 innings and allowed one run on four hits, along with two strikeouts. Anthony Garcia went an inning with three runs allowed on three hits. Reece Maniscalco worked two-thirds of an inning with two runs allowed. Matt Ellmyer (1-0) threw the final 2.2 innings and struck out two while not allowing a hit.
 
Radford starter Cole Dunn threw 2.1 innings and gave up six runs on six hits, with one strikeout. Cody Boone worked 1.1 innings and did not allow a run on three hits and two strikeouts. Cameron Fritz went 2.1 innings with two runs allowed on two hits, along with three strikeouts. Brandon Donovan threw 3.0 innings and gave up two runs on two hits while striking out three. Colby Higgerson (0-1) gave up one hit in the tenth.
 
The Terriers will host UNC Asheville on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. at King Field. On Wednesday, Wofford will travel to Lexington, S.C. to face Charleston Southern before returning home for a four-game weekend series against Harvard.
