Baseball Posts 9-0 Shutout of Eastern Shore

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team earned a 9-0 shutout win over the University of Maryland Eastern Shore at Russell C. King Field on Tuesday. The Terriers scored three runs in the second inning and added four runs in the sixth inning on the way to the victory.
 
Wofford is 15-7 on the season, while Eastern Shore is 3-18 overall. The Terriers were led by Mike Brown with three hits and four RBIs, while Nolen Hester had three RBIs. Dillon Oxyer led the Shorebirds with two hits.
 
Lawson Hill started the second inning with a double and John Dempsey walked. With one out, a double by Nolen Hester drove in both runners for a 2-0 lead. Hester stole third base and scored on a single by Mike Brown for a 3-0 advantage. After both teams were retired in order in the third inning, Wofford added a run in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Mike Brown to push the lead to 4-0.
 
In the sixth inning, John Dempsey and Colin Davis walked to begin the frame. Nolen Hester reached on an error and Dempsey scored. A single by Mike Brown scored two more runs. With two outs, a double by Hudson Byorick drove in Mike Brown to give Wofford an 8-0 lead. Both teams went in order in the seventh inning. The Shorebirds left one on base in the top of the eighth. In the bottom of the eighth, Nolen Hester walked and stole second. A double by Alec Cargin scored Hester for a 9-0 advantage. Eastern Shore went in order in the ninth to end the game.
 
David Yourke (1-0) went six innings for the Terriers with one hit allowed and two strikeouts. Austin Higginbotham threw a clean inning. Jake Hershman closed the final two innings with one hit allowed and five strikeouts.
 
Marcus Brown (0-2) started for Eastern Shore and gave up six runs on six hits, along with three strikeouts. Chris Sanders, Johnny Franco and Andre Bell also pitched for the Shorebirds.
 
The Terriers will conclude the series against Maryland Eastern Shore on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. at Russell C. King Field.
