Baseball Falls 2-1 At Florida A&M

Tallahassee, Fla. – The Wofford College baseball team opened a weekend road series at Florida A&M on Friday with a 2-1 loss at Moore-Kittles Field. The Rattlers score in the first inning, but he Terrier tied things up at 1-1 in the third frame. In the bottom of the seventh the Rattlers took the lead and held on for the win.
 
Wofford is 16-8 on the season, while Florida A&M is 10-14 overall. The Terriers were held to five hits in the game, with Andrew Orzel driving in the lone run. Seyjuan Lawrence led the Rattlers with two of their six hits and an RBI.
 
After the Terriers were retired in order in the top of the first inning, the Rattlers led off with a double. With one out, a single drove in the run for a 1-0 lead. Both teams went in order in the second inning. Nolen Hester opened the third inning with a double and he moved to third on a ground out. Mike Brown reached on a fielder's choice, with Hester out at home plate. Andrew Orzel then took advantage of an error and Brown scored on the play to tie things up at 1-1.
 
The Rattlers left one runner on in the bottom of the third and Wofford stranded one in the top of the fourth. Florida A&M had a single in the bottom of the fourth, but a double play ended the inning. Matty Brown and Andrew Orzel had singles in the top of the fifth inning, but a strikeout left both runners on base. The bottom of the fifth saw the Rattlers retire in order.
 
Brett Rodriguez singled to open the sixth inning. After a pair of fielder's choices, Colin Davis singled. A pop up ended the inning with two runners stranded. The Rattlers left one on base to end the sixth inning. Wofford had two runners on base after Andrew Orzel was hit by a pitch and Hudson Byorick walked, but a fly ball ended the scoring chance.
 
In the bottom of the seventh with two outs, the Rattlers had a walk and back-to-back singles to plate a run for a 2-1 lead. The bases were left loaded at the end of the seventh. Both teams were retired in order in the eighth inning and Wofford went in order in the top of the ninth to end the game.
 
Austin Higginbotham (4-2) started for Wofford and went 6.2 innings with two runs allowed on six hits, along with seven strikeouts. Jake Hershman threw the final 1.1 innings without allowing a hit and striking out one batter.
 
Florida A&M starter Kyle Coleman threw 6.2 innings with one unearned run allowed on five hits and two strikeouts. Morgan Mendez (2-1) and Jeremiah McCollum combined for the final 2.1 innings with two strikeouts and no hits allowed.
 
The Terriers continue the series against Florida A&M on Saturday at 2:00 pm and Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
