Baseball Wins 11-2 Over Mercer

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Saturday, the Wofford College baseball team defeated Mercer 11-2 at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers scored four runs in the second inning to take the lead and added four runs in the seventh inning and three in the eighth to secure the win.  
 
Wofford is 19-10 on the season and 2-0 in the Southern Conference. Mercer is 12-16 overall and 1-4 in league play. With the win, Wofford has secured a series win over Mercer for the first time since the Bears joined the league in the 2015 season. The Terriers were led by Colin Davis with three hits and three RBIs, while Matty Brown had three hits and a pair of RBIs. Bill Knight led the Bears with two hits and an RBI.  
 
The Bears left one runner on base in the top of the first inning after a single and the Terriers went in order in the bottom of the first. After Mercer was retired in order in the top of the second, John Dempsey had a single with one out for the Terriers. Colin Davis followed with a single and then Ethan Cornelius reached on a fielder's choice. A Matty Brown single drove in a run and Mike Brown added an RBI single for a 2-0 lead. Andrew Orzel doubled off the wall in left field to score two runs as Wofford took a 4-0 lead.
 
Both teams were retired in order in the third inning. Mercer led off the fourth with a single and the Terriers then turned a double play. The Bears added a double but the runner was stranded. Matty Brown walked but was picked off to end the fourth inning. In the top of the fifth inning the Bears were retired in order. With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Hudson Byorick singled, Brett Rodriguez was intentionally walked and Lawson Hill was hit by a pitch. A ground ball ended the scoring chance for the Terriers.
 
In the top of the sixth inning, Bill Knight had a solo home run to make it a 4-1 game. The Bears added a single but the runner was stranded at third base. With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Matty Brown singled and Mike Brown walked. A line out ended the inning for the Terriers. Mercer was retired in order in the top of the seventh inning.
 
With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Brett Rodriguez tripled to right field. A single by Lawson Hill scored Rodriguez and gave the Terriers a 5-1 lead. With two out, Colin Davis cleared the trees in left field for a 7-1 advantage. It was his third home run of the season. Ethan Cornelius added a single and he scored on a double by Matty Brown to make it an 8-1 game.
 
The Bears doubled with one out in the top of the eighth and with two outs a walk was followed by an RBI double for an 8-2 score. There was one out in the bottom of the eighth when Hudson Byorick walked and Brett Rodriguez singled, with both runners advancing into scoring position on a throwing error. Byorick scored on a wild pitch and a single by Lawson Hill scored Rodriguez for a 10-2 lead. A double by Colin Davis drove in another run as Wofford had an 11-2 advantage. The Bears went in order in the ninth to end the game.
 
Hayes Heinecke (6-0) started for Wofford an allowed one run on five hits over seven innings, along with four strikeouts. Jake Hershman threw the final two innings with one run allowed on two hits and two strikeouts.
 
Mercer starter Kevin Coulter (3-1) went 6.1 innings with six runs allowed on nine hits while striking out two. Kyle Bialousz gave up two runs on three hits in a third of an inning. Will Bowdoin threw 1.1 innings and allowed three runs on three hits with a strikeout.
 
The Terriers and Bears will conclude the series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
